Make the best of Mumbai Monsoon

Water logged streets, potholes the size of craters and traffic that seems to have ballooned severely - that’s what Mumbai monsoons have in store for you. A look outside the window and the dark clouds render a gloomy picture. Summers may be hot and sultry but monsoons simply cripple the city of Mumbai.

If you find yourself stuck in one of these pounding monsoon spells, fret not! There is always a lot you can do in Mumbai. Here’s presenting to you an entire list of things that go perfectly well with Mumbai’s torrential monsoon season.

Movie Marathon

In this wet season, going to the movies may not sound like a lot of fun, but give it a chance. You get to the cinema hall, cuddle up with your significant other, sipping on a hot cuppa and munching on popcorn. Not such a bad idea after all, eh? But if wading through murky waters is not your idea of fun, make a quick call to the DVD library and have your favourite movie home-delivered. This is the best time for having a movies-n-pizza party at home!

Roadside Rejuvenation

As temperatures drop, a hot cup of cutting chai coupled with hot snacks is one of the best indulgences in monsoon. So venture out and explore the streets of Mumbai for monsoon specials like steaming hot bhutta (corn on the cob) with spices and lime, samosas or onion bhajiyas.

Tea City

If you’re a tea lover, Mumbai is the city for you! Easing the cold with a steaming cup of chai from a roadside stall is certainly for the brave. The rest of us can visit Mumbai’s beloved Irani cafes, like Kyani & Co, Paramount, B Merwan, to indulge in brun maska and chai.

Musical Melodies

Rainy season is the perfect occasion for soft, soothing music and some quality time spent with friends and family. Visit one of those musical concerts or recitals with them. If you prefer to stay indoors, invest in some good western classical or jazz albums or even some Indian classical music. A collection of sitar recitals by maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar or tranquil flute tunes from Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia promise to transport you to a different world.

Get Bookish

If digging into a book for hours together is your sort of thing, what better time to do so but now? Pick up your favourite companion, find the most comfortable couch in your pad and make your way to blissdom. Better still, head to your nearest bookstore, find a comfortable seat and read away - choosing from a variety of books.

Indulge your Senses

Rainy days do call for a little pampering. Book yourself at the nearest spa for a day of luxury. A head massage using ayurvedic hot oils or a hot stone massage might be just perfect on a wet, cold day. A relaxing Thai foot massage or a full body exfoliation may also be brilliant de-stressors. Check out the spas in Mumbai.

Watch the Act

A strong cultural background and a big Bollywood influence have led to the mushrooming of a lot of budding theatrical talent. Some popular theaters to watch plays in the city are Prithvi Theatre at Juhu, NCPA at Nariman Point and St. Andrews Auditorium at Bandra (W). While you are at it, definitely try the Irish coffee and samosas from the quaint café outside Prithvi Theatre.

Marine Walk

This is absolutely characteristic to Mumbai. What’s monsoon without a walk on the popular Marine Drive? As the rain drizzles away, the weather cools down and waves from the adjoining sea do their dance, Marine Drive makes for an amazing location to experience the wet season in its elements. So take a break from your hectic routine and soak in some salty sea breeze!

While the rain Gods are still having a blast, you can join them. After all, there’s so much to do in Mumbai!
