Crime Without Punishment

I have been reading about the ridiculous acts being perpetrated by the political or affiliated groups in Mangalore. Part of the problem of course is that our leadership is made of dinosaurs who are morally and mentally extinct. The other much larger part is the sense of freedom most criminal acts enjoy, certain political parties have built their existence on violence and continue to court the press by doing the same.

The police literally don’t do anything about it, you will never see them jump in to stop or save anyone because tomorrow if the power base changes they might get transferred or sacked. Look at acts like Godhra or the riots in Bombay back in the 90’s, why were so many people attacked without any intervention? I refuse to believe the police are cowards, so it has to be state sponsored, that powers that be may not have sanctioned the act but they let it happen and that is just as bad.

Although i think the problem is deeper than that. We as a culture have allowed petty crimes and small bribes to become part of the system. If i jump a red light i can offer a 50 and then not have to deal with the aftermath of going to court. I will never ever be pulled up for attempting to bribe a police officer. If one were to get into an accident i could pay my way out of it (i know several people who have)

Its this acceptance for crime and the use of money, power, influence to get out of its punishment that has harmed the integrity of our social structure. You could literally do ANYTHING you want and for the right price or the right amount of force you could get away with it. The current state of affairs is a direct result of allowing everyone to believe that its acceptable to bribe, force or lie your way out consequences.

If the government, its people were all willing to stem out this belief system starting from the lowest point we might have a shot at a little less corruption for the next generation. When people know that their actions will have a proportionate consequence they will think twice before their actions.

The crack down on drink driving is visible proof. When i started drinking (as an underage 17 year old) my peers thought drinking and driving was a cool thing. I know plenty of people my age and younger think twice before getting into that car after a night out.

You cannot eradicate crime with punishment but you can sure as hell make them think twice.
