As India gears up to celebrate 62 years of freedom, a young group of doodlers and graffiti artists gear up with brushes and paints. Come 15 August 2009 and this enthusiastic lot will be seen on the streets on Mumbai, painting the town red, quite literally so! The Great Wall of Mumbai aims at painting the wall that spans across Tulsi Pipe Road from Mahim to Dadar. This open project summons locals to get involved in the beautification of the city, a great way to express patriotism on Independence Day…
The Wall Project is a group of young artists and wall-painters. It originated on a small scale in Bandra and went on to become more popular through word-of-mouth and social networking. The group mainly uses art forms (sans religious or political attachments) in public spheres to make places more lively and attractive.
Wall painting sessions have been a huge hit in many other cities like Bangalore. They make for a great way to know your community, interact with locals and give the city a break from all those B-grade movie posters. The Great Wall of Mumbai gives Mumbaiites a chance to do just that! (And you don’t have to be an artist to join in)…
The Wall Project along with the Municipal Corporation of Mumbai is initiating painting sessions on the Tulsi Pipe Road, stretching from Mahim to Dadar running along the Western Railway line in Mumbai. The group encourages people to come prepared with a thought about what to paint and how much wall space will be required. Says Parag Gandhi, a member of The Wall Project, “We want the people of Mumbai to come forward and express themselves. We’re hoping the wall will be used purely for street art, not for public service or promotional messages.” The painting session is open to all, however, there are a few ground rules.
* No adverts, no religious writings on the wall, no political slogans, no foul language
* Clean up around your painting area on completion
