When a friend suggested I watch the DVD I have to admit I was skeptical. Me and self-help? I don’t need it! She agreed there. ‘Thanks’, I said, ‘but then why me?’ Well, as it turns out, it’s not ONLY for people who need a bit of a crutch but for anyone and everyone. A genius idea for mass marketing, I might add.

So while we are on the subject of self-help on blah, I might as well share an experience that I had recently. I applied the principle in a fun sort of way in my life and it has made a slight difference in attitude and outcome.

This is how it starts…Imagine a person going through a series of failed relationships, deaths in the family, job crisis, financial downfall, etc. She can’t see any hope to break free from all these negative situations in her life. She then stumbles upon an age old “Secret” that has over the decades helped many and made them overcome their road blocks. It made them extremely successful and well known through time because they followed the law of the universe… The Law of Attraction.

The Law of Attraction of the universe says…Whatever emotion one experiences with whatever task he/she is involved in, that emotion is expressed in one’s behavior and attitude, which is a signal to the universe. The universe then responds with a similar message and situation.

So if one is having a bad day and is cribbing and cursing his way through the day, he is bound to get more and more negative incidents occurring in his life. On the other hand, if one is having a bad day and responds to it positively he is bound to get positive reactions in turn. So this cycle is created by him simply by having responses to situations cropping up in everyday life.

In a nutshell, people invite situations by reacting in a certain way. The universe simply responds to the person’s thought and emotion.

Many narrated their experiences about having achieved more than they could have dreamed of. They got their dream job, dream house, dream lifestyle, etc by using the Law of Attraction in their lives.

All this is fine up to an extent where one can apply it to the daily grind but it going beyond that is certainly crossing the line. There’s a case of self healing and positive thoughts completely curing cancer at the last stage, without medical intervention. That seemed far fetched. Agreed, a positive attitude helps fighting off major illnesses but not without medical treatment. The fact that the author and producers claim and endorse that is ridiculous.

No doubt, selling self-help books, material and courses is an extremely clever way of making money and it may be plain silly to fall into that trap. But somewhere along the line it wouldn’t really hurt to try a new method to have a more positive approach to life. It’s just that someone figured how to put it all together in a book, linking it to some of the greatest people in history to add a mystifying element to it and marketing it on this basis.

I would suggest trying this out in a light hearted, fun spirited way and see how it works for you. Roll out of bed tomorrow and think you’re going to have the best day ever! See how it turns out :)

Shirsha says:

If I read this line of yours “Roll out of bed tomorrow and think you’re going to have the best day ever! See how it turns out…” and put it into action, why would I need a self-help book or a self-help course? This is good enough, isn’t it? All I need to do is abide by it!

The point that I never get in these theories is stuff like ‘universe’, what exactly do they mean by it? A positive outlook helps anytime, I agree, but this thing about the ‘universe’… thats whr they lose me!

Candy says:

Shirsha… The book is actually meant for people who are completely lost and need some direction, I guess. They’re so roughened by circumstances in their lives that even the theory of the ‘universe’ sending out signals to them gives them hope. So I suppose these self-help authors use such terms like ‘universe’ like hope for the despaired. As easily as I said, “Roll out bed…blah blah”.. It’s just as difficult for such people to believe in what I do to have a positive outlook.

Salonee says:

I don’t know about curing cancer in the last stage but a lot of studies have been done on the placebo effect and it has been scientifically proven (where the patient is given an asprin saying it the latest drug and the patient actually gets well). Just goes to show how powerful our mind is and how believing in something can actually make it happen.

Candy says:

I agree about the power of the mind and the placebo effect to the extent of it curing a headache. But to suggest that cancer can be 100% cured without any medication or chemo is misleading and for the producers to claim it on the video is highly irresponsible.

Shirsha says:

Candy, the next question that follows is, would such ‘roughened by circumstances’ folks look at a self-help book at all. They will look at it as a punishment kinds… and hradly know whr to look! ?

Candy says:

Well there is a market out there for these books, isn’t there? Otherwise they wouldn’t be so well known and popular.

Shirsha says:

So who buys? and why!?

thinktank says:

There was this accquaintance who nearly thrust this book on me a couple of months ago - i was very offended. I told him i didn’t need a book to “guide” me. He insisted, but i stood my ground. I slowly stopped taking his calls and now i’m not in touch with him at all. I hated the way he thought this book was the greatest gift to man since fire!

Anyway, he had been thru bad patches and is just coming through - it is at this stage that educated people seek out such books. There u go Shirsha - to give u more info, he was in the corporate world, got fired because he wasn’t good at office politics, had an accident on his way to tirupathi…

When conventional religion doesn’t give you the answers you are looking for, people often turn to alternative sources. I guess what works for one doesn’t work for the other.
If this book serves as a pep talk to a lost soul and brings him a ray of hope, then so be it.

Candy says:

Shirsha..There are tons!! That’s why these books & videos sell like hot cakes. The reason people like us scoff at the idea of needing self-help guides is that either we are lucky enough not to have confronted difficult situations in life or we’re just plain tough nuts to crack, able to endure any hardship. Not everyone is made like that. Some turn to meditating, some turn to chanting, some turn to praying and some turn to self help guides. Like Think Tank rightly said, when conventional religion doesn’t offer solutions then people turn to alternative sources. Whatever gives them the slight ray of hope.
