Eva Longoria has every reason to flaunt her perfectly chiselled body. The thirty-something actress has managed to keep at an envious size zero, owing to her favourite sport: kickboxing. So if you want to be fighting fit, get ready to go from paunch to punch!
Kickboxing started off as a sport, alright. But it has now become more of a fitness fad. Modern kickboxing borrows its style from martial arts, boxing and karate to an extent. It includes rigorous punching moves and cardiovascular exercise. Fun, yet effective, it can help you tone up and burn close to five hundred calories an hour! There are many variants to the sport - American kickboxing, Japanese kickboxing, Burmese boxing, Thai boxing and French savate.
Basic Hand Movements
- Jab is a straight punch from the front hand to the opponent’s head or the body, mostly used along with the cross
- Cross is a straight punch but with a spin
- Hook is a rounded punch to the head or the body in an arching move
- Uppercut is a rising punch which strikes towards the opponent’s chin
Basic Kicks
- Front kick, also called push kick, strikes face on with the heel of the foot
- Side Kick strikes with the side or heel of the foot with leg parallel to the ground. It can be performed to the opponent’s head or body
- Semi circular kick is a forty-five degree round kick
- Roundhouse kick, as the name suggests, is a strike with the front of the foot or the lower shin to the head or the body in a chopping motion
Kickboxing is a great option for those who’re bored of jogging and aerobics. Besides, it doubles as a self-defence tool. So get ready to kick some butt and enrol yourself in a kickboxing class.
