He’s boring, he’s annoying and he’s a complete waste of your time! You’ve barely settled into your seats at the cafe, let alone gotten down to ordering and you already want to go running in the opposite direction! Well, what’s stopping you then? Follow our exit plan, and you should be able to tactfully make a getaway from any lousy date!

Blind dates
Blind dates are risky so it might be a good idea to check out your potential suitor before the date. Have a friend go in first and give him a once over. If you’re friend assures you he’s a total minus then you may want to consider calling him and pretending you got stuck with some last minute work and won’t be able to make it!

Make only brief plans to begin with
Don’t agree to coffee, a movie, dinner, and drinks! Play it by ear. It’s better to keep it simple when you don’t know what to expect. This gives you a chance to politely exit after a coffee, or even extend to a movie, etc. if it’s going well.

Have a friend call you
Fix it up with a friend so they know they have to call you 30 minutes into the date. And irrespective of what they say, act like it’s an emergency and you have to leave immediately. If the call hasn’t come in yet, give your friend a missed call and in all likelihood, they’ll call you back. Or arrange to send them a 911 SMS when you’re ready for their call. This is an old trick but the challenge is to make your excuse sound convincing.
Personal crisis: My friend just called off her engagement and is having a breakdown.
Health crisis: My mother is feeling sick and wants me to take her to the doctor.
Work crisis: My boss wants me to forward some important documents to a client asap!

Have a friend show up
Ask your friend to hang out nearby just in case they need to execute a rescue mission. He/she should drop by upon receiving an SOS message from you. And then it’s up to you to pull of an Oscar winning performance of “OMG! What are you doing here, girl? You should totally join us!”. Maybe having your friend around will get the conversation flowing more than it did before. Either way, your friend can remind you about “that farewell party” you guys are supposed to attend that evening and so you can part ways with your date earlier than expected.

Get your date to bailout on you!
If you don’t have friends who are free or willing to help bail you out, and you’re starting to get desperate, try working the other way around. Get your date to bailout on you, instead! Do things that make you look unattractive - Say something that you know will offend your date. Make inappropriate remarks about his religion/mock his beliefs. Do things that will make you look unattractive - chew with you mouth open, burp loudly several times during the meal, or in the middle of a serious discussion, pull out a nail file or a bottle of nail paint from your bag and get to work! This may work but if he sings to the world, then it may sabotage your chances of dating other men…
