Kala Ghoda although the black horse is no longer there it is a great cultural walk. Amazing buildings across the street (the gem is the Sassoon Library) also located on the street itself is the Max Mueller & Jehangir Art Galleries. It is also the site of the Kala Ghoda festival which attracts a motley crue of performers and viewers.

However we arent going to talk about that. We will talk about the various gastronomic opportunities available. A variety of cuisines is available along this street from Indian to American fast food.

You can literally plonk your car and pick virtually anything you want to eat. The food ranges from the authentic to the Indianized versions.

TGIF - Their town side outlet had opened here and i gave it a shot. It was weak. Not as bad as Ruby Tuesday(Nothing is as bad as Ruby Tuesday)
Khyber - Great Mughlai food. It is not fantastic because it can be inconsistent sometimes. It is a great place to take any non-Indians looking for a taste of something local.

Silk Route - Strictly ok. I have had some ok meals and it is decent but i don’t think the restaurant has found its footing. It isn’t bad but on a street of so many joints, it doesn’t do enough to stand out.

Way Side Inn Sandwiches -

Chetna - The place is really run down and only dining out on yesteryears glory. Place needs a face lift and a new cooking team. Easily one of the worst.

Joss - Haven t been yet.

Bombay Blue - Americanized fast food serving everything from onion rings, nachos etc. The decor is great for all three restaurants as they are all under on roof. Bombay Blue to me is def the weakest of the three restaurants.

Copper Chimney - Disappointing. The food does not live up to the copper chimney name at all.

Noodle Bar - Some what Indianized oriental cuisine. However weirdly they do serve onion rings and hummus as appetizers on their Oriental menu. They have some really good steamed wantons, fantastic Ice tea as well as superlative green curry with rice. They used to make a great wok sort of bowl but it has gone downhill big time.

Samovar (opp side) - haven’t been there in years but from what i recall the experience was not great by any standards. Place is usually full however.

I’m a bit confused here. Should we or should we not take this foodie walk? From what you say, seems like none of these restaurants are worth the trouble going to Kala Ghoda.

gauravjain says:

fair question Candy. It is not too bad. I would def avoid Chetna and Bombay Blue to an extent. Otherwise the walk has something for everyone. Again, some people i know swear by Samovar and i didn’t like it.

So you just gonna have to walk down and tell me what you think….

sunit says:

How could you have missed out Trishna?

sunit says:

I would definitely defend Samovar- its my regular lunch spot.. I dont blame the people who hate *Scumovar coz no doubt 80% of the menu is crap (*coined by my dear friend shakfoo - http://mumbai.burrp.com/establishment/view/17451749 - i love calling it Scum ever since)

I am seasoned visitor and learnt things the hard way. Here’s a list of evergreen menu items that you will never regret ordering
- Hyderabadi Kheema Lacha Paratha
- Chicken/ Egg Biryani
- Chicken Makhani with Paratha (only on Saturdays- and the best I have ever had)
- Boti Roti rolls are decent
- Sarson da Sag, Makke di Roti

And of course- a beer on a working saturday afternoon!

anish says:

SAMOVAR EGG BIRYANI’s ALL THE WAY DUDE!!!!!!

Candy says:

gauravjain…Will definitely check it out when I’m in bombay next. :)

sunit.. I can’t wait to try those recommendations in Samovar. They sound fantastic!!

gauravjain says:

Sunit - trishna isnt on my radar as i am mostly a veggie boy. Besides, i was going for restaurants only on both sides of KG.

shakfoo says:

Thanks for the shout out Sunit!

I agree with Candy - why would you urge people to go on this walk when none of the places listed really cut the mustard in terms of a good dining experience (by your own admission)?

There is one little gem tucked away in the bowels of Kala Ghoda - Ankur. It’s kinda like the little borther of Trishna and totally worh it.

gauravjain says:

well its my experience. my brother loves Silk Route, some folk i know swear by Samovar. my point was simply to point out the options and my experience. to go or not is def the readers choice.

Save for Chetna none were BAD. None were ‘great’ either but it does not mean that you cant have a meaningful meal.

the biggest crime for the street is mostly inconsistency.

Nidhee says:

Isn’t khyber somewhere there??

Sumfinn says:

You also have a small outlet of Moshe’s on the first floor inside Fab India. The food & drinks are highly over-priced, so I would say just grab a sandwich and sit & relax for an hour after all the shopping at Colaba Causeway, Globus & Westside that are around.

sunit says:

Sumfinn, great tip. Was quite excited when Moche’s opened up in Fab India it is definitely a charming setting to grab a coffee and admire the vibrant Indian colors that rest in the store below. The salads are a decent option if you want a light lunch. I won’t vouch for the service though- the last time we went there for lunch all our orders got mixed up and they were slow as hell. I would have been a regular here but too bad you can’t smoke here with your caffeine. For that, we usually go over to the Westside cafe for a lot of our long (lets not disturb the rest of the office) discussions.
