Like any other Indian gal, chaats are my weakness. The tangy, sweet, spicy taste does wonders to the tongue and sort of lights up senses. It’s a pleasure from heaven to feast on these delicacies. And pani- puri aka puchaka aka gol-gappe stand out to be the best of chaats. Fried puries of aata/suji filled with the sweet-sour liquid… I can never get enough of them !

When I landed in Bangalore, searching for food joints that serve good chaats was the obvious task. It is hard to please a tongue accustomed to Mumbai style chaats…you see ! I was not sure if I will get the same taste in the land of Idli-dosas (no offence, that’s the image I had before coming here). To my surprise, every sagar joint serves chaats and they are pretty ok save the pani-puries. One is they will give you puries in a plate and the pani in a small bowl. Common… this is the worst way to have them. Real taste is when the guy dips his hands in the water and drops puries in your plate. (If you are too hygiene conscious, pani puri is not the dish for you :-) ). Also they sometimes put the hot curry in puri instead of potato mixture which is total no-no.

But I have found few places which serve pani-puris the way I like. Here are the places I like to go again and again…

Karthik Sweets – This is small sweet shop on CMH road, opposite to Café Coffee Day. They serve the best pani-puries, I have had till date in Bangalore. If you happen to go there on weekends, you might end up waiting for half an hour just to get in the queue to get the coupon. I assure you, the wait is worth it !

Kolkata Chaat – This is another small place on Jeevanbheema Nagar road, close to Fresh@IndiaraNagar. This guy gives you two options to fill the puri: spicy aaloo mix or boiled chana. Try the chana one sometimes it is yummy !

Anand Sweets – This place was recommended by everyone as best paani-puri place in Bangalore. They serve sooji puries which are not my personal favorite. If you are accustomed to the Delhi style pani puris, you will love this place. Other chats they serve are nice. This place is Kormanagala, at waking distance from the Forum.

Adiyar Anand Bhuvan – This place is again on CMH road, near to the Karthik sweets. It is more famous for the south Indian delicacies the serve. Ghee masala dosa here is yum! But the chats are also good. And the pani- puri is not that bad. This is my back up if Karthik is too crowded

I have heard of couple of places in Jayanagar. But it is too far to try out :-).

Many Adyar Anand Bhavans all over Blr serve chaats and particularly pani puri, but its v southie version of pani puri at times. The filling is not supposed to have curry pattha for God’s sake!
What abt Kanti Sweets, dont they have the pani puri things too? Or perhaps its the puri in a plate version of it!?
And off course the several roadside wallahs! They dont always pass the day-after-test, but they are quite irresistible otherwise!

Ashley says:

I never tried Kanti sweets but never heard if they serve pani puris. The Anand Bhuvan I go to serves good pani puris… with only aloo and no curry leaves.
And yes there are lot of road side pani puri walahs like the one behind my home who serve good one occasianlly. They are good for satifying weekday cravings :)

Ashley, if you are in Jayanagar - try Fun Foods. Kumara Park has this place called Gullus Chaat. Its good too.

desh says:

Its best to eat Paani Puri when its on a thela :), u knw shop takes th taste out of it

btw kolkata chaat house near Kathriguppe circle BSK 3rd stage is good, i thnk its quite good, the place is run by a allahbad-kolkata regime whch combines the phucka-pani puri styles…

althgh will try out th options suggested by ashley as i miss th dilli style paani puris…

n shirsha u got it rite, after comin to bangalore i have realised tht th most important component of pani puri is the stuffing, here they put hot matar curry into it whch makes th puris mashy, tht kills th fun

neway why dont we start a encyclopedia on Pani Puri :)

Isn’t there a Bombay Chaat House in Church Street?

Anand says:

Sorry for the plug, but you are right, there is a Bombay House on Church Street :-)

Ashley says:

Meenakshi, Yeah I have heard lots about the Fun Foods but its toooo far from my place to go :-(. But I will definitely try it sometimes… been lazy all these days :D.

Desh, yes like I said, unless the serving guys’ hands are totally dipped in the water while serving you don’t get real taste of pani puri. But I haven’t found many great thelas around here. Many of them put hot mutter curry with some weird spices :(. Let me know if you have any recos :). You should definitely try Anand Sweets pani puri. It is good.
And ‘Encyclopedia Panipuri’ sounds like great idea, I am sure we will get lots of contributors and readers too !

Candy and Anand, Yes there was Bombay House on CMH road and Church Street. I have been to the one CMH road. It had nice ambience and total Bombay estyle food but as far as know both are closed now. I couldn’t find any trace of the CMH road shop while the Church Street one has permanent ‘closed renovation’ board

Candy says:

Aww, that sux! I heard it was pretty good. I lovvvve paani poori but usually get to eat it at home. My cousin had jaundice some time back coz he ate chaat on the street. After that all of us have sworn off eating chaat outside.

Shirsha says:

Candy, Anand, Ashley, Bombay Chaat House shops used to be on CMH Rd and Church St. Then, all of a sudden, one fine day they disappeared!
The one on CMH Rd is replaced by Adyar Anand Bhavan now.
The one on church street also disappeared :( They had swell chaats though the quantity used to be huge!

Ashley says:

Candy, Hygene is big issue. We should be careful especially these days as the rains are pouring in !

Shirsha, I loved their paav bhaji. It was little on costlier side but v v nice. I wonder if they plan to reopen. I think, its from a famous group that own other restaurents too !

Candy says:

Ashley… Just googled it and BJN Group is apparently behind launching Bombay House. Their website however doesn’t mention why it was shut down and no info on when they are planning to reopen. Let’s hope it happens soon.

pady says:

Try in Jaya Nagar 4th Block next to LAssi Bar on the way to Pizza Hut… Its good too…
