What’s Your Biggest Restaurant Pet Peeve?

Going out for dinner with family or friends is one of the best ways to close a long, stressful day….or is it? Fancy loud, rattling kids on the next table just when you are about to engage in some pleasant conversation. You can’t possibly beat them or join them, you just gotta live with them! But hey, if it makes you feel any better, you’re not the only one. Check out these real snippets by real burrpers, who share with you their biggest restaurant pet peeves.

A good meal is all about a good experience, service included. Arrogant, indifferent or slow service is the biggest turn off. Fellow burrpers have borne the brunt of it, and warned you against it.

  • “The staff was cold and looked unhappy. In fact, the security guy at the door gave us a warmer greeting than anyone inside… My friend had to chase the staff three times before he got their attention.” - MumbaiMoo about Salt Water Cafe (read more)
  • “They have a very cocky attitude and do not change or alter dishes as per customer preference.” - Yashesh about Mia Cucina (read more)
  • “This place must get the worst-service-ever award!” - Salonee about Hard Rock Cafe (read more)
  • “Our server was so poorly trained, we had to repeat each word twice for him to understand and yet I wasn’t sure if he understood everything” - Janice about Hot Plate (read more)

I totally hate it when the server recommends a food item which is so bad, you can’t get past the first bite! Looks like our burrpers have been there, faced that.

  • “I, upon the recommendation of the waiter, asked for the Asparagus Linguini. Big, big mistake. Felt like throwing it at the waiter for having ‘recommended’ it to me.” Rakshita about The Tasting Room (read more)

Speaking of annoying recommendations, check this one!

  • “The owner, who is an ex police officer has some of his pics in his uniform with a promotional write-up. His ego-trip self-promotion just does not stop.” Hemin about Diva Maharashtracha (read more)

Another big pet peeve is having to wait for your food to arrive, sometimes, for hours together!

  • “On every visit, we’ve had to wait a long time, at least 50-70 minutes, for our food to arrive.” George about Nandos (read more)
  • “There are abnormally large waiting times for food to arrive after placing the order even when not crowded” - Amit Vagal about 5 Spice (read more)

Now I love children, but when they screech and run all over the restaurant, I get trasnported from a romantic dinner destination to Disneyland…

  • “Its a circus alright, with children all over, pushing for the buffet!” - Lashkar about Cirkus Cirkus (read more)
  • “The waiter did his best to silence the kids, but couldn’t.” - Anand about Sabkuchh Food Plaza (read more)

This one’s an absolutely intolerable restaurant crime - poor hygiene levels. Be it a dingy bathroom, sticky cutlery, soiled napkins or unsolicited guests (you know!) an unclean environment is one of the biggest pet peeves. Here’s what burrpers have to say.

  • “We were seated outdoors and just in the middle of the meal we saw a rat pass by under the table” - SmileyShruts about Cafe Penne (read more)
  • “This kitchen I’m talking about is home to rats and cats who all feast upon the food being prepared when no one is watching” - Vishu Shetty about Srinathji’s (read more)
  • “We saw a small cockroach… it was nicely fried and smashed!” - Saeed about Highway Gomantak (read more)

Burrpers relate many more of their restaurant boo-boos which certainly get a thumbs down from me and the burrp community!

  • “The service is very bad and racist, clearly showering more attention on white customers than Indians” - Richa about Gaylord (read more)
  • “The menu looked promising till they said they don’t actually make half of the things! Then why put in on the menu?” - Diti (read more)
  • “The kebabs were served downright cold and not at all tender.” - Anirudha about Sealords Bar & Restaurant (read more)
  • “The waiters were clueless about practically everything around them!” - Kasimhansia about Sahibaan (read more)
  • “We ordered some fish; it came to us undercooked, clearly a hasty job.” - Zishaan about Sheesha (read more)

Now that you know you’re not alone in your tryst with restaurant pet peeves, send in your experiences. Hopefully the restaurateurs are watching this space… :-)

once ordered a bowl of soup to be shared (or 1 by 2 as we call it). we were served two empty bowls and one huge bowl with the soup. they *refused* to split the soup for us and *refused*, again, to give us a ladle/big spoon. eventually had to scoop out the soup ourselves using those small ceramic spoons that we were given to drink the soup! talk about DIY!
