I opted to eat lunch at a nearby mall and drove up to get some not too bad Enchilada and a Kala Khatta Slush puppie. On my way back i walked by a shoe store and went in. I saw this really cool pair of converse all stars white and red. Had to have them.

While paying for them i knew i would pay a greater price when i got home. See the thing is i have about 16 pairs of footwear that i know of, not including the keepsake i have from my grandfather (that is a whole 6 pairs more than my wife does. Apparently I am one sick puppy)

At home of course i had to answer the set of questions ranging from did i need another pair to i have gone out of my mind, or if i ever buy another pair i must sign the divorce petition.

i cant help it, i see a pair and if i think its cool, it if its me, i MUST have it. However its not that simple when it comes down to it. A man needs a few pairs for a different occasions. I never bought a pair for the heck of it and i DID need all of em.

Have everything ranging from Prada (in the picture below, the one nicely covered, they come out only for air) to Aldo.

You dont get a lot of options in Bombay especially when it comes to quality and well designed boots (Prada, Kenneth Cole) Fratelli and Rosseti have opened a branch in Bombay but at $800 a pair i would really rather not. Florsheim and GBX have introduced some good boots and loafers which are worth a look (at Metro Shoes, Colaba) Aldo of course has one or two decent pairs of boots here and there.

Something completely unavailable is a good pair of leather thongs like the ones below
leather.jpg

i have looked and looked but i couldn’t find them anywhere, i used to have a great pair by Abecrombie & Fitch and then by Banana Republic but it seems no one in this country makes something close to this. I saw a pair at Nautica but they arent in stock yet (if anyone has an idea do let me know )

Anyway i digress,

shoe closet

1 pair good black boots (must have)
1 pair good brown boots (must have)
1 pair regular black boots shoes (for work)
1 pair brown dress shoes (for work)
1 pair brown dress shoes (for monsoon)
1 pair cool tan boots (wedding boots)
1 pair regular brown boots (for monsoon)
1 pair tan loafers (for variety)
1 pair gym shoes
1 pair running shoes
1 pair regular leather thongs (my fav thing)
1 pair daily wear slip ons (must have)
1 pair red sneakers (for color)
1 pair white sneakers (coz they are cool)
1 pair brown leather sneakers (coz i go out)
1 pair white leather sneakers (coolest thing ever)

Excessive? i don’t think so.

Necessary? absolutely.

For me it’s just one pair of Björn brown shoes and a leather chappalish sandal from Lee Cooper. I wear either jeans or shorts so they both pairs work out well for me. Planning to buy one more pair of shoes - Gumboots for the rains ;-)

sunit says:

Gaurav, I really envy every one who can just walk into a shoe store and pick up what they like!

I am suffering from an abnormality which makes me feel rather handicapped in this country i.e. my shoe size is freakin 14 US. The tragedy started since i was in class 7. I could never find THAT ‘navy blue’ corona canvas shoes that the school wanted every one to wear. Who the hell had a shoe size12 in class 8??? These school teachers man- they just couldn’t understand my misery. I was sent home for not wearing the correct shoes a number of times. My entire family used to plan to drive from Chembur into Colaba Causeway on a mission to find shoes for me. It was it was like a full day out- lunch, movie and shoe hunting.

Luckily, there are enough giants in my family and I inherited a lot of used shoes from my uncles. I used to manage to pick one pair each time I visited them for dinner. “Chachaji, doesn’t seem like ure using these… Can I….?”

Anyways- life goes round in a full circle- and guess what? All the factory outlets of the biggest brands started opening up in Chembur. Just like the chain of factory outlets in Central Parel. For obvious reasons all the large sizes land up at these outlets. And every once in a while i get lucky with a pair.

For me buying shoes is like collecting art. Its rare- just pick it for whatever price…. This opportunity will never come again. This has led to me collect a quite a few pairs. heres my list

1.) Black Addidas Basketball shoes
2.) Grey Reebok Sneakers
3.) Nike all weather ( absolutely love these)
4.) Brown Sneakers ( Some random brand - my wife bought them on her last visits to Canada)
5.) Brown suede leather shoes
6.) Black Leather shoes ( these 2 I bought at go - Bhaisaab isme ek dusra color hai…? Great! Bring it on)
7.) Nike ACG Floaters (recent addition)
8.) ‘Raste ka maal saste mein’ Floaters (Picked these up from Bangkok for like 300 bahts - super comfortable. Totally over used. They are almost done wished i’d bought 10 pairs - wud have been a life long collection)
9.) 3 mojris (from my wedding collection)
10.) Dark Brown Leather Sandals (these are really smart but I sweat like a pig in these- strictly not for mumbai. usually carry them when i go to a less humid place)
11.) Black Leather Chappals (Just for back up- again a big sweat shop)
12.) Reddish Brown Leather Sandals (I bought this out of desperation- i dont like them anymore.. the lighting in the store probably made it look better.. just can’t stand the color anymore- total jhatak vibes)

Phew! That was a pretty long list.. didn’t realize I had so many - I am sure have beaten my wife at this game too! I should check…

Shirsha says:

Totally understand the footwear fetish!
Btw, you wife has just 10 pairs!? In that case, its not really your fault, I suppose!!! :)

gauravjain says:

it isnt. she is practical. there isnt any space for shoes anymore so she doesn’t buy

Candy says:

You have gotta be kidding me!!! HOW can ANY woman own fewer pairs of shoes than her husband??? I mean, it’s just not possible!

My hubby & I have serious discussions on the number of pairs I own but that doesn’t really deter me from getting more.

Candy says:

If space is the issue then it’s time you made room for her shoes! Hee hee!

smallsquirrel says:

I refuse to disclose the total number of pairs of shoes I own. Let’s just say I had a shoe “culling” before I moved to India, which resulted in hysterics, and me waving goodbye tearfully to more than one pair as I watched them go away to good homes. I brought with me some 15 pairs to Bangalore, and the rest are safely in storage. anything with heels over 2 inches did not come with me. no pair costing over $200 came with me. I had nightmares of prized Jimmy Choos or Via Spigas being washed away in monsoons or having the heels snapped off by uneven footpaths. NIGHTMARE.

How many pairs do I really have? I will disclose this. They all stay neatly in boxes, with a polaroid photo of them affixed to the end of the box so I can easily see the contents. And they had their very own closet. (in bangalore they are all willy nilly and out of boxes and I feel badly for them.)

Yes, I have an issue. Now ask how many handbags I own. LOL.

shakfoo says:

Y’all must have heard the adage, “You can never be too rich or too thin” - to that I add “…or have too many shoes”.

My personal total is 34 pairs and I have to say that I NEED every last one of them.

Nidhee says:

Gaurav you should try the Loft in powai. Some good shoes there.

My personal total… let me not comment…coz my hubby still doesnt know that some of them exist (just in case he reads it).

We will divorce if i buy another handbag… i just ripped him with some good hidesign bills :).

Candy says:

Nidhee… Same story with my hubby and me. Shoes and handbags are a BIG no-no so I’ve come up with a deal with him. I get to buy 2 top designer bags in a year and in return, I won’t buy too many other brands. Though I’ve bought only 1 this year, this ruse seems to be working! Try it!

Nidhee says:

Thats a nice deal candy. Defi worth a try.

But i dont think i have that kind of will power. And the case with me is that not only do i buy brands, i also buy simple roadside stuff if it catches my fancy. I bought 5 diff types of purses last month when i had gone for a holiday to sikkim and nepal all ranging between 500 and 1000 local stuff.

the only saving grace is taht he is into books and my house is overflowing with them. So evertyitme he looks at my bags collection, i ensure that i remind him of the books floating in the house. keeps him mum for a few days :).
