Style Emergencies: And Fix-its!

You’ve stepped out in style, sashaying your perfect locks, strutting your perfect stuff, making a statement, ruling the roost. Sadly, we live in a not-so-perfect world. And you, the unsuspecting victim that you are, can be hit by a style emergency at any given point of time.

Fret not. Because the key to handle a fashion emergency is keeping your calm. Know that it can happen to anyone! Yes – Beyonce Knowles has had some major hair ‘fallouts’ in public. And Mischa Barton has been caught dead with titsy-bitsy disasters. Now I’m sure you do better than these Hollywood hotties! Master these quick fix solutions to common style breakouts.

Heel breaks

Fix it: The best way to deal with a broken heel? Break the other heel and say “now we’re even”. No, seriously, this works. It’s better to walk even and glue on both the heels at home later. But if you’re feeling too guilty to uproot the other heel, just buy a new pair of shoes. Malls are ubiquitous! Or just look for a stationery shop and buy instant adhesive. Use a bead of glue, stick and hold. It works wonders.
Plan ahead: If you’re wearing high heels, carry a small tube of superglue in your bag. Never know when you’ll need it. You could also carry flat ballet pumps – they are lightweight and super cute!

Kohl starts smudging

Fix it: No matter how good or expensive your kohl is, it is bound to smudge when you’re exposed to the slightest heat or humidity. Use a wet wipe or tissue and gently rub off the excess kohl. If you can’t find tissue, take a small amount of lip-balm on the tip of your finger and rub gently.
Plan ahead: Use translucent powder before applying kohl. It prevents smudging without affecting the colour of your kohl liner. Kohl is softer and is meant to smudge. So if you loathe the smoky look, stick to regular eyeliner.

Strap snaps

Fix it: Racer backs, tanks, evening gowns – there is so much in the warbrode. Obviously, we need fancier bras to match. But fancy bra straps jerk off at the weirdest times, don’t they? If you face a strap snap in public, rush to the restroom. Check to see whether the strap can be secured again. But if it snapped off once, chances are it will snap off again. So keep it in place with a safety pin. You could also use a ribbon to ensure the strap stays put. No ribbons or pins? Pull the two straps together and knot them up! When two become one, the length will be just enough to get you through.
Plan ahead: Always make sure to get your size right. Don’t make it too tight!

Lipstick starts bleeding

Fix it: If you’re carrying tissue, great! If not, sweetly ask the coffee shop server to hand you one. Then place the sheet between your lips and press. Wipe off the extra colour carefully. If you have baby powder, dab some around your lips to prevent further smudging and staining.
Plan ahead: Wear a matching lip-liner. A solid outline mostly arrests the moister lipstick in its confines. If you have cream or liquid foundation, rub some on your lips before you apply lipstick. That will also keep lipstick contained.

Shirt gets stained

Fix it: Dropped sauce on your pretty shirt? If you’re eating, you’re most likely sitting very close to your saviour – salt. Sprinkle some salt on the shirt before you even wet the stain. Then blot the stain gently with a cloth and water. Do not rub – it will only spread the stain. If it’s a grease or butter stain, cover it with talcum powder and tap it off after a few minutes.
Plan ahead: Carry make-up wipes. They work as temporary stain removers.

Hem comes down

Fix it: This is when double-sided tape comes in. Use it to temporarily mend stitching that’s come undone, stop a blouse from gaping or keep straps from slipping off your shoulders. If you don’t have tape, put the gap together with a safety pin or simple staple it! Only thing – it will not look as neat as tape.
Plan ahead: Travel-packs containing needle, thread and buttons are small enough to slide in your purse. They always come handy.

Hair goes flat

Fix it: Hang your head upside down and sprinkle just a little bit of talcum podwer. Then comb through your hair for the talc to soak up the oiliness in your hair. Alternatively, play on the flat hair look by taking a portion of hair to one side and securing with fancy clips. Voila! Bad hair day comes to an end.
Plan ahead: At home, hang your head upside down under the hand drier for 30 seconds, and then use a fine-toothed comb to tease the area around the crown for a voluminous look.
