People, peace please. April 18th, 2008

Peace! The ultimate bliss every individual on earth is seeking & starving for, the word that unites the world evolving into a happy & holy place to live in. However, where do we get peace? Today, we wander from place to place in the pursuit of peace. Do peace really exist or just a mere word in the lexicon. Why do we pledge for peace? Ripple of thoughts flow when you magnify the world through the eyes of hope.

Lust, greed, pride, anger, attachment are so synonymous with human being. The physical form is entrapped by the vices that have ruled our mind & soul. What about love? It exists in the hearts but has metamorphosed with time; the love that dwells is the materialistic one. We are more mechanical & technical in life yet fail to get peace. The primary reason is time. No time for our family & friends. Are we so occupied and only respite is on national holidays. Don’t you think we have spun a web of complexities out of nothing? The beautiful thought flashes in my mind “If you cannot change time, it is time to change”.

Man’s mind has become vagrant & wild and the heinous deeds of mankind are reaping hyper tension, hatred & death. The debatable issues like the nuclear deal, global warming, Tibet trauma, bomb blast, the racial race & child molestation has grave emotional stress to all. Deals done, treaties signed yet the memorandum of understanding doesn’t guarantee peace. After all, peace can’t be purchased. An analysis of the problem proves that it all stems from man’s mind. Mind- the deadliest weapon of world and mind you, unemployment that leads to student unrest has its own heavy toll. As the saying goes “Empty mind is the devils workshop”.

The root of all evils that causes sorrow & sufferings springs from human mind. One must realize that peace is rooted in the mind in the form of thoughts which are manifested into actions. Self realization and self purification is required not just chanting mantras. There is PEACE IN WORLD when there is PEACE IN I. I am not my name. I am not what my profession is. So Who am I? The simplest question that brings positive thoughts and righteous actions must be answered. “As I walked by myself, I talked by myself and myself replied to me and the questions myself, then put to myself with their answers I give to thee”.

Guide for Skin and Hair for Monsoon July 8th, 2007

We all love to enjoy the gloomy clouds and days-off during the monsoons, but absolutely hate it when it comes to the rain damaging our hair or skin. When was the last time you did something to save your hair or skin from the rains in your busy schedule? Here are a few tips, that may help you cope up with the monsoons without making you look “all washed out”!

Skin Care

Cleansing

Skin requires regular cleansing in order to keep it looking fresh and healthy. Here are some home recipes you can use to get ever-refreshed skin.

Dry skin: You can use almond paste or honey. Take ten crushed almonds and make a paste and add two tsp of honey. Massage on face for 5 to 7 minutes, rinse face and pat dry.

Oily Skin: You need a very mild cleanser to get the dead skin and dirt off from skin. Use pure oatmeal scrub to cleanse oily skin or use ripe papaya pulp as a mild exfoliant.

Toning

Toning is a necessity at night. During monsoon, a lot of airborne and waterborne germs are let free. So a good anti-bacterial toner will go a long way to prevent skin infections and breakouts. It is a good idea to get anti-bacterial face wash too.

Dry Skin: You need to gently tone a dry skin since the size of your skin pores is small. Use five drops of chamomile oil in a one tsp milk to tone dry skin

Oily Skin: Mix ten drops lavender oil in one tsp water to tone oily skin. Sweep the above mixture on your skin with gentle strokes by help of a soft cotton ball and nothing very harsh so that you avoid scratching pimples with further may result it scars or blemishes.

Moisturizing

Moisturizing in the rains is as important as it is in summer.
Monsoons can mean a de-hydrating effect on dry skin and an excessive-hydrating effect on oily skin. The skin gets wet often and with the constant wetting and drying, a lot of dehydration (yes, in the rains!) takes place. That explains the itchy feeling one gets during monsoons. Use a non-water based moisturizer, if you happen to get wet often. Otherwise a water- based moisturizer will do just fine.

Dry Skin: Take I tsp honey, I tsp fresh curd and I tsp jojoba oil. Mix all of these together and apply on your face and neck. Leave it on for 10 mins and then wash off with plenty of water.

Oily and Combination Skin: In 2 tsp rose water add 2 drops of strawberry oil and fresh orange oil. Mix and apply on face and neck for 10 mins and then wash off.

Hair Care

Hairstyles and Grooming

Styling can only be done when it goes suddenly from damp to dry. Damp hair is very flexible. It stretches easily and breaks. It needs to be handled cautiously. Towel dry gently and don’t pull or comb wet hair. Use your fingers or a blow dryer to dry hair until it’s just slightly damp. Then pick up your styling brush. If you have to rush, just style the front and sides of the hairline, which frames your face. Focus on the top of the crown, which creates the top layer of the hairstyle.
My best buy is L’Oreal Liss Extreme Reflexium Leave-In conditioner to tackle the frizzy hair and Schwarzkopf’s Hot Oil Treatment.

Got trapped in the rains? Your hair is limp and lifeless. And you have a party or an important meeting to attend. Don’t panic! Here are some tips that can put life into limp hair. Firstly detangle using a wide-tooth comb. Blow-dry until hair’s just a little damp. If you’re at work, let hair air-dry. Take a few long curler clips (available at markets) and insert them wherever you want to restore wave or shape. Let hair set for a few minutes, remove the clips, and shake.

Home Remedies

Beer makes the super soft silky and shiny. Use it after shampooing your hair by rinsing beer on your hair and leave it on for twenty min. See the difference to believe for yourself.

Three teaspoons of Olive oil, half teaspoon of castor oil and coconut oil mixed together with a paste made of methi seeds is a must try tip to avoid frizziness in rains.

Two tablespoons of curds which is kept outside for three to four days mixed with three teaspoons of lime juice applied as conditioner after shampooing. Keep the mixture on your head for 30mins and wash off. This is the best method to avoid flaking of scalp and roughness.

Important Tips for Clean and fresh hair:

• If possible keep your hair tied in the monsoons. Go for a shorter hair cut if you want to avoid dirt build up on your scalp or get splits ends. A well-groomed look is essential in the monsoons.
•Do not let your hair get wet in the rain. Pollution, floating toxins in the air come down with the rain and settle on your scalp. This makes your scalp feel itchy and may cause dandruff. Always cover your hair. My advice- make umbrellas or raincoats your best friends, to avoid danger to your pretty locks.
• Rinse your hair with a gentle shampoo and condition it after, if your hair happens to get drenched in the rain. This way you prevent dirt build up on your head.
• While traveling by public transport or perhaps if you drive a scooty or something, keep your head covered with scraf/cap,etc. This protects your hair from probable damage.

By the way, the famous BOB cut has returned and perhaps you can try the new side swept bangs with slightly longer strands around the centre.

PC Stuff - I mean Computers July 6th, 2007

So, recently we had a lot of computer trouble at the house of Gaurav. Viruses, lost drivers, computers disappearing of the LAN, portable hard drives not being compatible anymore. Whole thing was made especially worse due to projects that were due over the last two weeks.

Deadlines having been met we sat down with a new IT manager to sort out a process to get the systems back in the best condition and to ensure no problems will creep in later.

Some of our solutions for small Offices -

- A complete format and re installation of the original OS. For Laptop users you can just restore to factory settings by pressing F10 (varies) at start up and following on screen options.

- Minimal programs installed i.e. only essential work related software.

- Installing a strong, anti virus package and updating it every day with the new virus definitions. I would recommend the Active Virus Shield by AOL created by Kapersky who create the Kapersky Anti Virus which is one of the highest rated Anti Virus proggies out there. It is free and what we use on our PC’s at present. You can also go for Norton Anti Virus 2007 which is about 2100 Rupees, though we don’t like it anymore due to system slow down.

- Firewall, A firewall program is a must nowadays, it all seems excessive but trust me its worth it, especially at work. Prevention is always better than cure. I would recommend the built in windows XP firewall or Zone Alarm.

- Additionally a basic package of non-work related software to keep things smoothly functioning. Adobe Acrobat Reader, Apple Quicklime, VLC media player as it plays most codecs, Open Office from Sun Micro systems for Word Processing - Fully compatible with ms office 2007. GIMP as an alternative to Photoshop. All these packages are completely free.

- For small offices, set up an internal back up workstation. 180GB hard drive, partitioned 3 ways. 20GB C drive. 120GB Main Back up Drive and a 60 GB smaller back up drive. Install Second Copy (INR 1200 a copy) and it will back up all your data. Simple to install and manage.

- Avoid Peer to Peer download software like Kazaa, Limewire they are a major source of trojans and other spyware.

- Institute a best practices program

Any data introduced into the computer systems must be approved and scanned for viruses.
All data is stored in the back up server along with individual PC’s
User PC’s do not access each other, only the server.
Password protected access to back up folders.
Virus Scan before shut down.
Final Back up before Shut Down (auto)
Clean wipe of Back up Servers once project is over
Periodic Data Dumps on DVD or HDD.

Any other advice or ideas from others?

When the cats away, the mice will play June 5th, 2007

My boss was on holiday to Egypt last week. Good for him, but while he was gone, every single employee in office was as if on vacation too. No one came to office before 11am, when office hours begin at 9:30. Most people took long lunch breaks. Many others disappeared after lunch. He returned on Monday and what do we see, everyone was in office clacking away at 9:31am. In fact the one girl that showed up at 10 got a red slip from the HR head for being late.

We are a small start up with a make shift office and no rule book in place yet. But I wonder, given a chance, how many of us do not exploit our freedom? How many of us are really passionate about our work? How many of us work for ourselves and not for the boss to see? Mind you, most of these people claim to be workaholics. They stay in office till 8pm on a normal day. Then again, the same bunch is the rather active sort on orkut too. mmm.. makes me wonder.

You’d say, well, bosses are smart enough to know what goes on behind their back. Are they really is the question? And whats the solution to such a problem?

Fork your way to success June 5th, 2007

Many a times our prospective employers or our colleagues ask us out for a meal and at times such as these; our table manners speak volumes about us as professionals and are an important part in making a favorable impression.

Very little attention is paid to refining the table etiquette in our country especially w.r.t to the use of crockery, cutlery and other items on a table. Here are some tips to help one sail through these “dinner interviews”.

1.Follow the lead of the host unless the host has indicted that you to take the lead. Ladies are mostly given the lead through out a meal.
2.Unfolding of a napkin is the opening score of the meal. It should be
a.Opened after the host opens his or hers.
b.Spread in your lap throughout the meal
c.If it’s a small luncheon napkin, speared it fully. Dinner napkin to be folded across the length.
d.To be used to blot the mouth gently
e.To be left on the chair in case you need to leave the table. It’s a signal for the server that you would be returning.
f.Kept neatly on the right of the plate to signal the end of the meal. Host’s lead is a must to follow.
g.Kept neatly, neither refolded nor crumpled.

3.Ask a server when in doubt
4.Do NOT order the most expensive dish on the menu or more than two courses unless suggested by the host.
5.In case of food related allergies, please check the ingredients involved with the server.
6.Place the glassware or cups back in the position.
7.Remember solids on your left and liquids on the right of your plate – helps you remember the plate setting.
8.Silverware is confusing to most of us. The trick is to start from the one placed farthest to your plate. Work your way from the outermost layer and you don’t have to worry.
9.Cut with the knife in the right hand and fork in the left. Use the fork to secure the food in place as you cut it.
10.You could eat with the fork in the left hand with the tines facing down (European style). Or you could eat with the fork in right hand with the tines facing upwards but then you need to keep your knife across the top edge of your plate with the blade facing in (American style).
11.When you are finished, do not push the plate away. Keep the knife and fork like the hands of a clock pointing 10 and 4. The blade of the knife should be pointing inwards and the tines of the fork should be down. The spoon should be in the saucer instead of the cup.
12.When asked for salt, always pass salt and pepper both. Place it in close reach of the person on the table.
13.Please keep the elbows off the table and this will help you maintain a good posture.
14.Rule for removing food is that it has to come out the way it went in. For e.g., a piece of bone discovered has to come back to the plate by way of the fork.
15.It’s rude to pick your teeth at the table. However if mandatory, hold you napkin over your mouth.
16.Remember to not talk when the mouth is full.

Last but not the lest…. Break your bread and not cut it.

How long can one skate on good marks? June 4th, 2007

Way back in college, while preparing for Group Discussions (also known as GD), one of the rare topics that we came across during our mock-GDs was _ ‘Do students, who are the best academically, go on to make it as the best, professionally?’. There were several variants of this topic too, but they all triggerred us to think this, if we have good marks (its so long since I used those words!), will we also be the smartest, or let’s say, the most wanted, employee around?

We all know, there are about tons of changes that happen in life, as one goes through the phase of being a student to chilling it out at work! But this is a story of what happens if you are a good student, getting all those good grades, all diligent, disciplined, not-lazy, hard-working, sincere, and more often than not, the apple of your teacher’s eye. If you were none of the above, still, you’ve got to read on, for this is also a story of one who was not any of those things that might have earned him the ‘good’ before the student. Which of these two went on to being the highest rated employee later on? Is there a fixed formula that can be applied to know which students crack the scene at work and which don’t?

Let’s begin with why we want to know the answer to these questions. My idea is to figure out if there is a direct correlation between your grades and marks and your performance at work. For, is it not this very point on which most companies rely on, to select their candidates? Is it not this, that preconditions an interviewer’s mind on what to expect from the interviewed? Is it not all about marks and percentages for a freshman? Why else do they have cut-off percentages for candidates who can attend the written test, which is like step one for the selection procedure, at most companies?

In a quest for answers to doubts such as those above, here is what I observe _

> Students who are all about living in that moment, donot go much further. To elaborate, students who are studying for the upcoming exams, with answering all questions in the question paper perfectly, the only thing on their mind, are less likely to absorb the actual course content. They rigorously work out old question papers, seek answers to those odd questions, which have never repeated but may do so this year, revise answers to problems, go all over the extra mile! For all their hard-work they are often, at the end, left with little knowledge of what the course was all about. But, they do know the answers to the questions in the question paper really well. So, with this kind of half-knowledge, it is not really surprising that they often donot reach up to the mark at work. Needless to say, this is not always the case, but this is often the case.

> Lazy students remain lazy all life. Once the seeds of indiscipline get planted in your personality, you are unlikely to let go off it, remaining a person who wants the easy way out, all your life. A hasty exam preparation will get you the marks, but indicipline is evil and continues to corrupt your system. You will find life is unfair, hikes are unfair, performance ratings are unfair, but never attributing this injustice to your own indifference to a thorough performance.

> For some, it has to be the area of interest. There are two kinds of people when it comes to work _ One, the kind who will put in an almost thorough effort at the work assigned, regardless of whether they like what they are doing or not, whether it gives them the kicks or not. They are often consoling themselves, encouraging themselves, pushing themselves ahead telling themselves this is the practical way! The other kind requires the right kind of work and the right kind of environment to contribute effectively. This kind really flourishes and rises upto its ultimate height provided the right impetus. The heights achieved by such folks are usually much greater than those achieved by the less-stimulated ‘practical’ kinds. But hey, there is no right or wrong about this, we do need folks of all kinds to keep a project moving!

> The small drops and the mighty ocean. Performers can again be classified as those who contribute in little amounts, facilitating the mighty performers and then, those who contribute big, because an idea struck them big. I am guessing these two kinds of contributors are born out of the two kinds of people _ one kind that spends all its life working out life’s little problems, winning life’s little battles, merely getting the work assigned completed and awaiting the next task. Then the other kind, that spends all its life day-dreaming, thinking of big ideas, big problems and big solutions, they are not just getting the work assigned completed, but are also thinking up the next step.

> Domestic challenges affecting work. As a student, we are protected, pampered and kept away from facing life’s real challenges, often. Rarely, if ever, did we have to stand the queue to pay the electricity bill and then go to attend school, but while working, there is something or the other that needs to get done, every day, in order to keep the home running. In other words, we get domesticated! We have to time-share between work and domestic duties, unlike as students, when all we had to do was either study or relax! Or should we read this as, how well do you multi-task?

> Some folks are happy with being average. Unfortunately, this is something that gets moulded earlier as a kid. If your folks didn’t push you enough, its unlikely you went on to do closer to your maximum capability. Pushing / encouraging is different from exerting undue pressure. Such folks are happy achieving 50% of what they set out to achieve. It is sad that so much capability gets wasted, but they dont seem to care! Even at work, they are happy just earning the daily bread, they donot seek excellence. They donot feel the need to innovate, they donot bring new ideas or energy to work.

> Getting a job is not a destination. But some of us end up thinking so. ‘Gotten myself a job that I like’ is often the ultimate ambition a student possesses. While this is good, it is also necessary that one recasts one’s ambitions after crossing the ‘gotten myself a job that I like’ phase! Otherwise, stagnation is bound to happen, leading to a decremental effect on the performance at work and a disappointment to your employer who pinned big hopes on to you.

With observations such as these, am thinking its the personality which decides the performance at work. However, there are little pointers one can get about the kind of employee a student will lead on to, from the marks transcripts. A student with the best marks may not always make it as the best performer at work, but someone with below average marks is unlikely to turn out to be a good performer. But most importantly, you can gauge yourself perfectly, to know how you will fare, and the changes you are going to need to fare even better.

Off course, in this whole quest we have kept counterproductive agents at work aside, like bad bosses, sensitive issues at work, pay, benefits and the company itself. Those which require a separate zooming in, a whole new quest!

Are you being insensitive at work? May 21st, 2007

Utterly insensitive and grossly unprofessional. That is what I’d call someone who does not respect diversity at work-place. While there are many forms to this problem, the one that I’d like to post about is the one in which male colleagues take to crude, unpleasant, biased discussions about women, well before their women counterparts. Consider the man who chooses to discuss seriously the ‘injustice’ of the 3 month long maternity leave, referring to it as ‘they simply sit at home and get paid for nothing’. Believe it or not, some have the cheek to discuss this before a minor number of women colleagues at a lunch table or even during the non-work discussion at team meetings.

Is he doing this well-aware of how just the concept of maternity leave is, in terms of benefits given to someone with a health risk and as a duty towards society? Does he well-intentionally, mean to discuss this as a joke which will make every woman who is present around the table uncomfortable, regardless of whether she can voice out her discomfort or not? Or is he so unthinking, so careless, so casual, so immature, so uneducated that he does not realise the importance of maternity leave? Or, he probably thinks, ‘Come on man, a joke is a joke, she is supposed to take things in the right spirit!’!

That is just one instance, there are numerous little things, jokes, conversations, casual statements, which men unthinkingly make at work-place, completely disregarding how they might discomfort the women around. There can be something as nonchalant as a manager asking the male employees who work under him, to join him for a smoke outside. Am not sure his women employees will want to take that in the right spirit, after all, they do want to bond with the manager too! Why should your gender, or a smoking status, be the reason for your manager to know what kind of tasks you prefer, or what problems you’re facing interacting with others, or to know you better? Imagine the lady manager discussing the current project status and such-like with her employee in the ladies rest-room. Would you, as another in her team, like that?

Few of your smoking team-mates might do the consoling with ‘Oh, come on, we don’t really discuss work, we mostly gossip about foreign bosses’. That gets you all the more envious, you so want to know the inside story too. Why won’t the manager share it with you, simply because you donot smoke!? It kills the team spirit, do you realise? This is probably not something that can be voiced even, what do we do? Coo to the boss, ‘Please do call me when you go down to smoke, I want to come too!’!!?

Then this recent talk about the 8pm curfew for women. There were bunches of male colleagues discussing how men must work day and night while women are the ones who can enjoy the perks of the company and the state. They held up the joke Cyrus Broacha cracked, how it might be a better idea to draw a 8pm curfew for the men, instead of the women! Am not saying the law was right, it was rubbish. But discussing it in the vein of how it is unfair to men, instead of something along the lines of how this will undoubtedly rip apart all efforts towards an equality at the work-place, might have been much less unpleasant.

Some things are off course a joke, all of us love jokes, don’t we? But not when it gets unpleasant, hurts, or somehow seems to make a derogatory statement about ourselves. Tell me if this sounds like a nice joke, a colleague, after the news piece of Shanti Sounderajan who was stripped of her medal at the Asian games upon a failed gender test, goes ‘Somehow I feel, these south indian women are not very feminine and donot even look like female.’. It would get my blood boiling, even though I may not be south indian women. It is a grotesque statement. You are probably wondering if there are men like this at work places today. Oh yes, there are! Lots of them abound, just hear them speak!

There are diversity workshops held by the Human Resources departments of most companies these days. They attempt to motivate a healthy work environment, making people aware that there might be jokes which not everyone would enjoy, that there might be people with different points of view, different lifestyles, different people! Unfortunately, most such indelicate people look at workshops like this as a waste of time, or at best a good way to spend time in office and yet not have to put in work! What is sad is, this is not something that can be very strictly enforced, or checked for violation. This is something that people feel and not always voice, the discomfort of the minority.

There is probably a little exercise all of us can take. A very small thing to ensure that we are not on the wrong. Ask yourself the following, have your jokes ever caused someone to look away or not laugh along? Would your statements, though seemingly nonchalant, while with friends at work, cause anyone to not hang around with you? Does your treatment of team-mates bear any shades of a partiality? Lastly, do you really believe in the equality of men and women at work? If not, its about time you changed your beliefs, for your own good!

Job Hopping - Consider this April 30th, 2007

These days there is Job portal boom like they had the dot com boom few years ago. We see advertisements like “salary making you feel small… ” and stuff like that, everywhere. And particularly in the IT world we have so many companies coming up and competing for people. Many people like to do job hopping every six months; main reason being higher salaries. Most of them have take on it as “Ohh… that company is paying me higher salary. Why should I stick with one giving lesser one?” How good is that when we think of long terms? I mean is money the only thing we work for and nothing else. If we look at our counterparts in the other countries and try to understand their situation, they were under similar mentality a decade ago. And today they are facing with outsourcing/job cuts and unemployment. As I understand from them, when it comes to job cuts companies prefer to go for people with good skills and also who have been there for longer time.
I believe its time for us to sit back and think where we want to go professionally in longer term. What will make one stick to a company/work place?

Work - I came across this phrase somewhere “Blessed is he, who gets the work of his choice”. We all have different choices towards work type. And when we get work of our choice, work becomes party everyday.

Growth opportunities – After all we work for betterment of ourselves and it comes with opportunities to go forward in the career path. It is basic human nature to want to go up the ladder and not stay in same position all the time.

People – Yes they form very important part of the work environment. It is always advised to not mix work and personal life. But when you are spending more than 8 hours of day with office people, a comfort level has to be there. You can’t survive in a place for long where people are bitching and trying to pull you down all the time.

Policies/Perks – This is very invisible issue but works wonders when people talk about their company. You will find this as topic of gossip in almost all places, “Hey you know what; this xyz company is cool they provide free food and free massages”. This is just and example but such small things sure do make difference when it comes to giving preference to the company.

Company performance/reputation – If my company does not perform well overall what is the use if they are giving you highest of salaries.

Money - After all, nothing works without money in this modern world :-).

Goa Fest 2007 April 23rd, 2007

I’ve just come back from what i feel was the best ever managed and organised show in the past couple years! The Goa Fest 2007 was the most beautifully constructed structure. Held at the Cavelossim Beach in South Goa over two days (20th and 21st of april) , the expanse of the beach was turned into one big hangar. One saw everyone from the advertising and media world. Film makers , copywriters, ad gurus, creative heads so on and so forth. Rain dances to sunset parties , poi dancers to limbo dancers,kingfisher to blackdog, brazillian dancers to perfomances by the Priscilla Queens …we had it all. One got to see some awesome creative work over 2 days. The award ceremonies thrilled the participants
There was a buzz in the air at all times, lots of energy , millions of ideas , truck loads of humor, the killig heat ( the rain dances made up for it though), good food,hip shaking music… the beach was converted into one big advertising fair. 2000 people and more .. the place was buzzing with activity. If you were not here .. then i’d say you missed it.. but then there’s always next year ;) .
