bringing california style to india April 30th, 2007

Being a born-and-raised Californian now living in Mumbai, I’ve desperately tried to import California beach-bum like fashion here. I’ve tried my best, and I’ve pasted some pictures of the type of style I’m comfortable rocking, regardless of whether I’m going to Henry Tham’s or Chaurasia Paan:af2.jpg

Nothing beats a funny, attention grabbing comfortable t-shirt.

af3.jpg

Roughed up polo tee always looks stylish while also showing people you’re not as pretentious as the prick wearing a body hugging tee and fashion sunglasses

af4.jpg

Cargo shorts keep you cool in the hot summer while also giving you a nonchalant cool look.

af5.jpg

The Hawaaiian print floral swim shorts are here to stay - versatile enough to wear to the beach, out and about, as well as at the pool

af6.jpg

I can never pass up a good, comfortable pair of destroyed ultra low-rise bootfit jeans. Hard to find here, but you can find them. Perfect with a pair of flip flops and a t-shirt.

af7.jpg

Cargos are definitely in this summer for guys, but extend your style a bit farther and go for a pair of camoulflage cargos. You could rock these with a polo tee or even a cutoff in the summer.

af8.jpg

What California boy can forget his flip flops? Go for something a little funkier than usual. Yes, Crocs are in, but I don’t think they’re here to stay. Flip flops are, so pick up a funky, but comfortable pair. Leather is a no-no and for the yuppy who is wearing them with white linen pants.

Any other California boys out there? Even if you’re not from California, some of us are Californians at heart, so feel free to suggest your own California style!

Make-up Essentials for Every Season! April 15th, 2007

Stock up on the basics, just incase you are left behind…Here are a list of make-up essentials you’ll be needing all year round! Here is a list of the new products in the block which are definitely worth a try! :)

1. Foundation: One of the most essential parts of make-up is foundation, which is usually applied to get more coverage than any other base. If you need an overall “even” look opt for foundation. Choose a foundation closest to your skin color, and since the summer is already here, I reckon you go for something light. Tinted moisturizer is also a good option, just incase you don’t find it you can mix your foundation with your usual moisturizer.
Check out: Lakme Daily Wear Soufflé or Maybelline Wonder Finish.
For an elegant sheen try Revlon Face Illuminator Lotion

found

2. Concealer: Yes…it’s completely alright if you have some dark spots on your face that you want to hide, like those scars left by break-outs or dark circles that haunt you as you can’t get enough sleep. Concealer’s usually blend well in such areas and just incase you do not have a concealer you can use the dried off part of foundation that is left in its cap.
Check out: Maybelline Cover Stick and Lakme Magic Face Concealer

3. Kohl or Kajal: No one in this planet will disagree on this one. A girl might forget to wash her face but she can never forget to wear “Kajal”. Simple yet elegant, kohl makes your eyes speak volumes! Always keep it handy and opt for a waterproof and smudge-proof one for the summers!
Check out: Lakme Kajal and Kohl Sparklers to add that extra sparkle!

kajal

4. Mascara: Flirty lashes are forever in season. Black mascara’s have always been an important part of every girl’s make-up regime let it be thickening, lengthening, or waterproof. Just incase you want to break the rules and go wild…try blue mascara…it’s all of a sudden come back again! Go retro chic.
Check out: Loreal Volume Shocking Mascara Maybelline Volume Express Range.

5. Nail Color: Keep it fresh! Vivacious greens, flirty pinks, steamy reds or just fun oranges, go crazy with your nails…nothing is as hot as perfectly well polished nails!
Check out: Colorama in Pink Sparkle and Wonder Violet or Street Wear Nail Color in Sand Stone.

Garnier Pure Face Wash gel for Combination to Oily Skin

8. Matte Lipstick: Very essential for lipstick wearers everywhere. Gloss might give away soon but matte lipsticks are better option for daily wear and for longer hours.
Check out: Maybelline Moisture Extreme in Desert Bloom and Sugar Plum Ice.

9. Lip Balm: Yes…lips get damaged in summers too! You need to protect them with the right product so that they remain smooth and don’t get tanned. Applying lip balm before putting lipstick helps in longer wear of lipstick.
Check Out: Vaseline Petroleum Jelly or Blistex Lip Tone SPF 15.

10. Facial Wipes: Facial Wipes are life saviors when it comes to traveling and getting rid of all that make-up from your face. They leave your skin clean, cool and refreshed.
Check Out: Baby Wipes (Inexpensive substitute to costly facial wipes)

11. Eyeliner: Black liner nowadays is worn in winged style…something that you saw Angelina Jolie wear in Alexander! Very Cleopatra…but still very haute! You can also experiment with bold colors like metallic blues and bright greens.
Check out: Lakme Liquid Intense Shine Eye liner in ink blue, sky and bronze.
Maybelline Expert Eyes Pencil liner in Charcoal.

12. Eye Shadow: Dramatize your look by giving your eyes a splash of color! Crème eye shadows stay for longer hours and do not smudge. For a more outdoorsy look you can just sweep some basic glitter over your lids, to go glam!
Check out: Loreal Color Appeal TrioPro Eye Shadow Kit

Check out: Lakme Starshine Lip Gloss or Lakme Lip Gloss in Chocolate and Strawberry

14. Blush-on: Go girlie with that slight pinkish blush. Natural is always the best option when it comes to blush-on. Pinch the apples of your check right after your bath…the redder or pinker they get is the most suitable color for your blush-on. Brush product over the apples of your cheeks (the plump part that comes out when you give your broadest smile!) with a big brush for best results!
Check out: Maybelline Expert Wear Blush or Loreal Blush Delice

My Tip: Start with basics, tea, maggi, dal, chawal, macaroni and cheese pasta and then try your hand in chocolates, cakes, dishes, etc. You can also learn how to make candles and perfumes…!

3.Pamper yourself at home: Drench your feet and hands in warm water with some vinegar or rock salt in it, then file your nails (rounded short nails are the thing this season), moisturize and paint them anything you like! Or fill a bowl with hot water; add some marbles and sea salt. Drench your hands in it and play with the marbles for about 5 minutes with each hand. It works wonders for tired hands!
My Tip: For cracked feet apply a thick paste of haldi and castor oil on them….do this 15 minutes before bath and end up with gorgeous healthy feet or you can mix a cup of bottle lauki juice, with half cup ginger oil and heat it…..and then massage it over your feet!

4.Watch all episodes of F.R.I.E.N.D.S with your pals: Enough said? …F.R.I.E.N.D.S. has been an integral part of our lives since we saw the first initial episodes and cracked up in front of the TV without even knowing what its all about…there’s no plot…..there are only these amazingly great set of six people who are just to perfect together…..they make you wana be them trust me on that! Please if you have missed out…you have a lot of catching up to do…you can never get enough of Chandler, Joey, Ross, Monica, Phoebe and Rachel!
My Tip: Catch FRIENDS Monday-Friday 7pm IST on Star World! Or order in complete seasons from your DVD wala!

My Tip: Join Motor Driving School’s just incase your siblings or parents aren’t ready to help!

6.Rent Movies: It all depends on your mood……..! Go to a movie rental place…look through all the DVD’s…see something appealing….just grab on to it!
My Tip: For teens try American Pie, Mean Girls, and John Tucker Must Die. In action check out the MI series or something adventurous then go for Jurassic park series or the classic Jumanji! On a more serious note try Philadelphia and romantics can see Kate and Leopold…….I just know you won’t regret it!

7.Get yourself some retail therapy: Get out of the house! Go to malls and markets. Literally shop till you drop i.e. until your Mum says the money she had has exhausted! New summer collections are out in various malls and stores…go get yourself something that is in fashion this season!
My Tip: Mango, Westside, Levis, Shopper’s Shop, Lifestyle, etc.

Bra Blunders April 5th, 2007

It kills me to see a good outfit getting ruined by a wrong bra and all the ridiculous things we do with one of the best things the French have given us - The Bra…. (besides the kiss of course!) and how to avoid them.

1. Women if you are a 36C and think you are a 36B …. you are not. Trying to cram into a smaller bra size (and no am not talking of a minimizer)…. makes the bust look flat, not to mention the unappealing look of the excess bulges from the side; and its amazingly uncomfortable (this is for you to know Mr. Reader). The strategy should be to get yourself a good fit. Although there are established methods for measuring a woman for a bra, the only real way to fit a bra is by trying them on, and finding the correct size by trial and error. Having said that ladies, measuring for a bra is as scientific as linear programming (I could only think of LP because I was never able make heads or tails of it). There is a set procedure and conversion guidelines that can be used to come up with the perfect fitting number. I shall detail the procedure in my next post… but remember this….. you cannot make a square peg go in a round hole without: 1) losing its original shape and 2) making it look incredibly sorry.

Please do a BIG favor for your breasts, your self esteem and the men who are ogling …forget about trying to cram into smaller sizes. Trust me, you’ll look a lot better, feel a lot more comfy and be much more appetizing to any man if you wear the right bra.

2. If you think that you have the bust and the tummy to pull off a tight tee….. please don’t ruin the look by wearing a normal bra with seams on the cups. The most disgusting things to look at are seams on the cups and loose cups to make matters worse. If you have it, flaunt it and flaunt it right. Try buying a seamless bra or even a normal sports bra will do.

3.Strapless bras exist!!! If you think that showing an old faded bra strap or a cheap see-through plastic strap will put you in the first row at fashion events, GET REAL! You will look like the biggest loser on the circuit. Please get yourself a good strapless….. and by good it needn’t be expensive (try shopping at elco arcade or glorious near trios at Bandra or Manish market at four bunglows Andheri W). You could also try a halter bra. In case you do not have many strapless outfits, you could look at bras that come with detachable straps. For those who can and love to indulge… you might like straps that are embellished.

4. Pebbled Nipples are not embellishments!!! Having worked in a freezingly cold air conditioned office myself, I know I used to look perennially aroused (and when I was, a sensible guy would think i was feeling cold!). But then i realized (and soon by god’s grace) that not only does it look odd; it looks rather unappealing, taking any flare away from the expensive office wear. I agree that thickest of cotton bras do not do the needful, however a hard cup bra can do the trick (it is seamless, gives great shape, and also looks better than the normal ones). It is not a hard cup; it’s the normal stuff that is sold as a push-up or a seamless bra. Such bras also give the illusion of a fuller bust. For those who have fuller busts and padded may be over the top, try using simple pads made at home with industrial soft gauze and absorbent cotton … just place them strategically.

5. Low cut outfits DEMAND well defined (not necessarily deep) cleavage and NO bra please! It looks silly to wear a low cut and then continuously keep pulling it up to cover the peeping bra. Instead, go for a demi-cup which is a contoured bra, together with underwire with the cups cut away to reveal the top of the breast. Any decent lingerie store should carry these. Labels such as Lovable and Triumph also sell them.

6. I don’t have enough!!!! All of us (Aunt P Anderson is not US) have wondered at some point or another…do I have enough? My experience with the darker sex tells me that what each of us has is enough so long as we maintain it and keep it good. If you still feel the need to make your breasts bigger at least give them a fuller look, use a Push-up bra that has additional padding at the bottom portion of the cup, which lifts the bosom and gives the illusion of a fuller bust. If you have breasts that start high up on the chest….try to avoid a push up…. they will stare into people’s faces.

Dear readers, going forward you can count on the useful, edgy, sometimes funny but always truthful insights on lingerie from yours truly.

People how about making an effort to dress for the occasion? March 30th, 2007

Ok.

I know its a free country and that all the blood shed from 1857-1947 gives us all the rights to dress as badly and carelessly we wish to but seriously… lets all wake up and use these hard earned liberties to turn out nicely.

I was at an upscale 5 star restaurant and was surprised to see literally punks walking in dressed like they were out to rob a 7-11 rather than a fine dinner. Even 50 cent wears a suit when he knows the occasion calls for it.

Now im not saying i was sitting there with a coat tail hanging between my legs. Nice clean jeans hanging off my waist (instead of my knees), my underwear preferences known only to me and a ‘clean’ ‘ironed’ dress shirt, a belt and shoes. both matching, made of leather sometime this century.

I am noticing an increasing tendency where it seems people go out of their way to be ultra casual just because they can. We don’t really have a suit or jacket culture in Bombay and more is the pity because elsewhere in the world people really do dress according to the occasion (if not at least according to station)

Simple rules - if going out some place nice, make sure it is clean, it is ironed, has buttons on it and for footwear, if your foot shoes, take it to the beach.

What bothers me the most is an increasing number of westerners seem to think Bombay = Goa. I was in Souk where a bunch walked in like they had just finished a day at the beach. I mean i was embarrassed for them. It is sad there aren’t many places with a dress policy.

Plenty of corporate offices i go to are now looking like a dorm room with sandals and t-shirts. Christ, don’t wear a suit but has anyone ever heard of Khakis? bloody hell!!! dot com days are gone. the geeks aren’t running the show anymore.

Women Only: Where to shop at Bangalore. March 28th, 2007

Shopping in Bangalore can be quite daunting if you don’t know where to look. So if you want alternatives to mall clothes, here is my basic guide for women’s clothing:

    Chic Casuals

Skirts, cotton trousers, capris, interesting t-shirts (not the regular boring ones but short ones with sequins and little design elements). Also casual party wear. Price Range: Rs.200 – Rs.1000.

1) MAX – end of Commercial Street, opposite the police station. Cheerful, well-designed casuals in all sizes.

2) Showoff – Brigade Rd., opp. Brigade Towers near All Saints. Only for small framed people as they stock stuff from Malaysia!

3) HUM India – Church Street. Next to Bheema & also at Commercial St., opp. Woody’s. Various sizes, good selection of party wear and branded t –shirts. You get GAP, VonHutch, Morgan etc. (Sometimes you get one free if you buy three. Prices start at Rs.300)

4) Tibetan Market at the Indo – Dubai Shopping Complex, Rest House Rd – it’s a lane off Brigade road. Take the 1st left after Nilgiris and Fifth Avenue when you are walking towards M G Road.
Once you reach the complex, get into the basement and you could stroll through nearly 20 shops that have unique casuals – you get great polka dots and skirts here.

5) Dirty Fashions – this one is a favorite with college kids. It’s on the lane opposite Woody’s on Commercial St. and has interesting party wear – chiffon tops, sequined tops. You also get sleek formal skirts and trousers.

6) Arihant Plaza & Mahavir Plaza – next to Metro Shoes, on the right-hand side when you drive straight into Commercial St. from Cauvery Emporium on M G Road (you have to cross two traffic signals).

Here you get more than just formal and casual clothes – you have various little stores selling shoes, bags, glares, watches, jewelry and cosmetics (don’t buy important stuff like sunscreen here though – may not be fresh).

7) Gypsy Casuals – Koramangala, near Lazeez and Jyothi Nivas college.
Again, a college favorite.

    Bargains and Summer Clothes

Disposable clothes for summer and branded factory outlets. Price Range: Rs.100 – Rs.350.

1) Fashion Factory – factory outlet of Bangalore’s biggest export house, Gokuldas Images. Nothing fancy here, but functional, good quality casuals.

2) Safina Plaza, Infantry Rd. – go to the 1st floor and walk around. You’ll find 2 -3 factory outlets which have cute designs. Great for linens in all sizes.

3) In the narrow lane opposite Woody’s on Commercial St, next to Dirty Fashions, you’ll see a mannequin on the ground floor that leads to a store on the first floor. Great for disposable, but interesting clothes. MUST Bargain like crazy if you look like a foreigner!

4) Commercial St. - opposite Metro shoes and Arihant Plaza there’s a crockery store in the basement. Next to that you’ll see a stairway with clothes hung on either side. Go upstairs. They have linens and can even tailor for you if you choose their fabric.

    Affordable Designer Wear

Boutiques which stock young designers and prêt lines of established designers. Price range: Rs.1000 onwards for a blouse. Rs.3000 to Rs.5000 for skirts.

1) Marmalade, Next to Spratt hair salon, Magrath Rd, walk down from Garuda Mall towards Eva Mall and you’ll find Spratt in between – great sequined skirts and kitschy stuff

2) Be: - Forum Mall and Commercial St – they have Wendel Rodricks to Priyadarshini Rao. Great if you want to buy a “label”, but not so hot otherwise.

3) Aftershock, Eva Mall, Brigade Rd – prepare to be dazzled by the color and the sequins. Must-see even if you don’t buy anything here.

4) Boheme, 2nd left after India Garage, Victoria Rd – showcase for upcoming designers.
5) Collage, Wood Street, Ashoknagar – good selection by young designers.

6) Levitate at Sanctuary, Hospital Rd, behind Safina Plaza – Bohemian and Kitschy accessories and apparel. Sanctuary is a “lifestyle souk” with a café.

Hope that helped. Feel free to add or ask for more info.

Summer’s Here! March 27th, 2007

Summer doesn’t just bring along with it…the sun…but it also brings along a new fashion season! And you all must have understood by now how crazy I am about fashion right? Well, today I ain’t just here to tell you how to stock up a new wardrobe…I am here to help you make your check list of the stuff you should seriously consider buying for this season! So go on ….my fella’s indulge…..!
(Courtesy:: I have uploaded a few of my pictures just to give you a insight what you should actually look for)

Fashion

1. Sunglasses: Go ultra glam with just the perfect pair! Something huge; kind of honeybee shaped with studs in the sides…to give you that edge over others…Guys opt for something classic yet huge…if you understand what I am trying to say..Brands ain’t important….you just need to find yourself something to protect yours pretty “peepers” from the harmful UV.
Try: Fastrack Biker Collection for Guys and Ladies look out for brands like Oakley and Ray-Ban and sports fan’s you guys can check out the new collection of Carrera Sport.

junk

2. Bright Junk Jewelry: A look is never complete without junk….Summer brings with it naughty heated moments….light flirty conversations…and everything “summer-y” you can think of…so please do me a favor go out buy yourself some subtle young light but bright colored chains, delicate bracelets, anything too heavy “is so” not summer and be very light on the ears….with small earrings, diamonds and the new plastic junk that you get!The boho look is in too!
Try: See Archie’s Collections, Hallmark, and Riverdale…in short all those gift shops….or if you want to go light on your pockets go for a stroll in linking road, lokhandwala market, colaba causeway, fashion street, etc.

3.Comfy Slip-ons: Ok…I don’t get it?…its summer and people are running around wearing keds, stiletto’s…leather straped…or knee-length boots! I mean..just cause it’s the latest fashion abroad doesn’t mean that you follow it blindly! Those people wear it because its probably winter out there….but do not forget its summer here!!! Stick to comfy slippers like osho’s or perhaps if you are a college student like me you can opt for converse…they are just so darn comfortable! By the way please keep your eyes open for this new thing that has come out called ‘Crocs’…they are just the best!
Try: Again local shop vendors, street markets, sports showrooms like nike, adidas, puma or those duty free multi-brand selling factory outlets.

crocs

4. Hair Accessories: It’s hot….and you got gorgeous long hair that is simply to hard to manage in this heat! What do you?…well nothing…just buy yourself some hair accessories.Hairbands, Headbands, clips, rubber bands, pins..the works!
Try: Cute girlie girl clips in pink, sky blue and orange…with perhaps hearts, stars and cute lil things…..single colored or bi-colored hairbands…don’t buy something multicolored cause everyone else is already wearing that…do you really want to be in the crowd or do you want to be “the crowd”? Think about it!

glasses

5. Big Handbags: Huge bags are all the rage….buy something you can dump all your make-up, your books…your novels….your clothes your wallets your everything! Buy something with long straps so it’s just comfortable enough to hold….and something bright is always advisable!
Try: In Touch in Inorbit, Malad….local vendors….Baggit branded bags in shops and asoka collection of lokhandwala. Maybe even bags in shopper’s stop and lifestyle.

Beauty

1. Sunscreen: Ban the sun this summer! Do not let the UV rays harm you! And tan you!
Try: Lotus SPF 30+, Lakme or the all time best Banana boat….Please opt for sunscreens above 25 SPF because the sun in India can really harm the skin.

ba

2.Shampoo: Shampoo your hair everyday to have a cool and clean scalp…the heat can cause dryness, itchiness, split ends dandruff and what not! And if you think that its bad to shampoo your hair everyday…think again cause that is just a myth!
Try: Ultra Doux with plant milk, Sunsilk Velvetly Soft or Pantene balanced clean.

f

3. Subtle Make-up: Do not wear layers of make up cause all of it well get all greasy and stuff due to the heat..and you might end up looking like a disaster! Wear to the max only black kohl, liner to define eyes…and gloss…..for shiny lips!
Try: Water Shine Liquid Diamonds Maybelline in Crystal Amethyset or Lotus lip balm for mosturized lips. You can opt for balms that have sunscreen too…that way your lips will be protected!

img1120t1.jpg

4. Nail Polish: Use bright colours like pink, blue, orange nothing to bold though…just fresh! Black nails look good too….you just need to know how to carry it…that’s all!
Try: Lakme, Elle 18, Street Wear…actually to tell you the truth I don’t think brands matter in nail enamels..if you think you got the right match for you go ahead and buy it!

Nail polish

So I hope you are happy, aren’t you?
If you need me for any other advice…you know where to reach me!

The in look in the temple of fashion March 21st, 2007

This is the in look in the capital of fashion over in Milan. We will allow my wife to demonstrate.

it involves pointy boots with jeans tucked into them, a top and a long jacket.

also, if you are a true fashionista in Milan you will NEVER and i repeat NEVER take of your sunglasses.

never mind the sun has set and its the midnight, never mind its indoors or deep in the bowels of the city heading out in a metro.

just like you never talk about fight club, you never take off your sunglasses. it is an essential part of the outfit.

the sunglasses themselves have to be wide, black and must have garish, loud logos on the side Gucci, Prada, Versace etc etc. preferably in gold or rhinestone

What we would call trashy here is haute over there.

Now, if you were to try this in Bombay i think you would get hit by a rock or be mistaken for a street walker.

the interesting dilemma it poses is that EVERYONE looks the same.

which is why Bombay isnt too bad. people dress down, shabby sometimes, or too casual. but at least everyone looks different enough.

i mean i wouldn’t mistake my wife for the nearest hot body again.

and trust me. there is hell to pay when that happens.

Denimology: Guide to perfect fit Jeans! March 9th, 2007

Ok now how many of us can acttually make out the difference between boot cut or flare or just perhaps straight fit or low waist? Come on, come on…its time to get the skeletons out of the closet now! If you can’t, need not worry your definately not alone! Here is all that you will ever know about denims….Read up now and thank me later as this article wont only leave you informed about the various styles in denims but also act as a guide inorder to find that one perfect pair!

Denimology!

Long Torso
Perfect Fit: If you want to show off that flat stomach go for a pair of low-rise jeans. Ideally you want a pair of jeans with a defined waist that will make your bottom half look sleeker. Long torsos should also try to wear a belt whenever possible, and go for jeans with zipper’s that are atleast 10cm long.
Avoid: Jeans with tight, stuffy crotches!

Heavy Hips
Perfect Fit: You should go for jeans with a bit of stretch so they’re comfy enough, and medium sized back pockets. Choose a jean with a low-rise waist and a slight flare to help to balance your figure.
Avoid: Styles with really big or really small back pockets and detailing across the back and big no-no to worn out denims especially when the butt region is concerned!

Short Waist
Perfect Fit: Low lying, hipster and super hipster styles will give you the illusion of having a longer upper half.
Avoid: Jeans with zippers more than 8 cm long and jeans with design near the waistline, you dont really want to attract eyes towards your short waist.

Curvicious
Perfect Fit: Go for designs with a flared leg, boot cut or pattern around the ankle area. This will help to direct attention to your calves…so make sure you’ve got some simply gorgeous shoes on as well!
Avoid: Fits that are tight around the thigh area and pointed or baggy styles.

Tall and Slim
Perfect Fit: Go for straight fits and just incase you want the attention towards your elgs go for something more flary along the outside length of the denim!
Avoid: Denims with a pointy leg. This will give only accentuate the size of your feet (and taller girls often have big feet) and make your legs look weird.

Petite
Perfect Fit: You look great in straight leg jeans, but if you’re looking to make your legs look longer, wear heels with a boot leg style, and make sure you go for dark-hued jeans.
Avoid: Styles with cuffed ends and the popular capris.

Now, don’t you agree with me that this was one of the most informative article on jeans ever? ….And as I always say…Glad to have helped!
