Every morning and evening on my way to and from work, I have to venture down New B.E.L. Road. And this experience leaves me with my heart in my throat each and every time.

New B.E.L. Road is a wide, straight tree-lined road with absolutely no median. As a result, people drive like absolute maniacs with no regard for the lives of others. The traffic coming from M.S. Ramaiah Hospital toward Mekhri Circle is coming at 70 KPH, at they take up 3/4 of the road… recklessly driving at oncoming traffic and refusing steadfastly to give way.

I cannot understand this phenomenon. And it’s everyone… buses, autos, bikes and cars all drive straight at us every morning, lights flashing. How can I give way?!?!??! YOU’RE ON MY SIDE OF THE ROAD AND I AM PRACTICALLY DRIVING ON THE FOOTPATH!

And this example is only one of many that I witness every day. Each morning and evening I shake my head incredulously at people cutting off traffic to turn left from the right-hand most lane. Or overtaking from the left. Or turning into traffic without looking even once to see if someone is already occupying the lane. I am incredulous at how careless the driving has become in Bangalore. Even in the last 7 months, it has become worse than ever.

And it seems to be a brand of horrible driving particular to Bangalore, because I did not witness nearly this much insanity in Delhi. OK, Mumbai is bad, but it’s a shade better than Bangalore. And while Hyderabad is crowded, it was not nearly as bad.

Why are Bangalore drivers so bad???? What can we do to stop this activity. Delhi just recently doubled traffic fines. Would that work here? And why don’t people recognize that if they stopped driving so badly that traffic would actually decrease?

The trick is to seem as dangerous as them - only then can u survive the maniacs of B’lore. Drive safe, but be aggressive. That’s what I’ve learnt. I don’t know how or when things got so crazy here…maybe the “metro rail” would reduce a fraction of the traffic and relax the drivers a bit.

Candy says:

I think it’s out of frustration trying to overtake the ultra-slow, on-a-cruise, ‘road-belongs-to-me’ auto rikshaw drivers in Bangalore. There ought to be a law against slow autos!!! That’s one thing I observed on moving here. The auto drivers don’t give a rat’s ass about other drivers and vehicles on the road.

Nice piece Small Squirrel - Of a short, uneventful business trip to Bangalore a while ago, the one thing I do remember is that drivers in Bangalore do not have the courtesy to stop or even slow down for pedestrians. My hotel was on Racecourse road, a stones throw away from work but it took me forever to get there coz it was impossible to cross the street will all that speeding traffic! Talking about courtesy towards pedestrians, Mumbai is no better. The only difference is, there are just so many vehicles on the road that speeding gets restricted.

smallsquirrel says:

thinktank… this is the attitude which causes the problems in the first place… each person compounding the horrible driving of the person before them with their own offensive (versus defensive) maneuvers. yes aggressive driving has it’s place, but it is out of control in bangalore, with people overtaking and forcing others off the road. but I do agree the metrorail should provide some much needed relief! :)

candy… yes autos are part of the issue, but I see ppl driving like asses when it’s only cars and buses. which reminds me…. bus drivers here are the worst… they cut across traffic without a care of who they hit or force off the road.

aarticulating… thanks. being a pedestrian anywhere in India is a health hazard. there are no proper footpaths (if there are, they are likely to be unstable). in order to cross a road you either have to 1) play frogger and run/stop/run/stop or 2) find a zebra crossing and hope there is a traffic officer there to help you. Racecourse road is pure hell.
