So over the past few months I have noticed quite a few TV commercials that have raised my eyebrows and caused me to think “Did I just see that?!?!?!??!”

1. One of them is the Veneta Cucine commercial with the family who “doesn’t want to cook.” Normal feeling, sure. But then we get to how the family is characterized. All light skinned, proportioned normally and dressed well. In comes the servant, and OH MY GOD! She is dark dark dark, wearing one itty bitty skimpy saree, a tight blouse, and her proportions…… massive breasts, teensy waist, and a huge bum.

Each time the commercial comes on I gasp. What are they saying with this characterization? All dark skinned people should be maids? All maids should be proportioned like Lara Croft and dress like prostitutes?

You could never get away with this overseas. There would be riots and lawsuits galore from minority organizations. Not that I condone that, either… but why is this kind of characterization acceptable here?

2. The next ad is part of that annoying series of Zatak Set Wet body deo commercials. This is the one where the cute young teacher is at the chalkboard, and one boy comes late to class. Apparently he smells good because suddenly she is reduced to acting like a foolish hormonal teen, shaking her head and giggling while obviously indulging in some hot fantasy.

AIYO! This is a teacher! And they have her basically fantasizing about bedding one of her students! How is this at all appropriate. Are they just going with the “hot for teacher” fantasy that most young men have when their hormones are racing? But now we’re giving them a way to make the teacher give in? I fail to understand how this commercial is acceptable. At the least, it is demeaning to women… HEY! Just smell good and you can turn any professional woman into an embarrassing, sex-obsessed pedophile!

So, have you noticed any commercials lately that made you say “WHAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!?”

Here are my two most hated ads -

1. The condom ads that showed up during the ICC Champions Trophy cricket matches. See this post denouncing these.

2. The surrogate advertising that Royal Salute, McDowells etc indulge in. They basically hide their liquor advertising behind “soda” or “cassette and cds”. WTF? Are the authorities sleeping or even worse ignoring these.

3. I also hate ads that target children. A child’s mind is so vulnerable. There should be a total ban on any commercial that targets children. In the west they ban ads targetting children.

Rupali says:

Man! I agree! Have you seen those grape flavoured condom ads during DAYTIME/PRIMETIME cricket matches!? This is preposterous! National cricket is arguably a “family event” and here we have porn-star like models insinuating that-for-which-you-would-need-a-flavoured condom for like acts with fruits such as grapes and strawberries. Absolutely unacceptable!!!

Beanzz says:

I completely agree about the Veneta Cucine ad. It’s hard to miss the dark skinned maid with the itsy-bitsy saree.

The MOODS ad, gosh! What’s the maid servant blushing about!?!?!

Apart from the ads that make you go WHAAAAAAAAT, there are the ads that make you go HUHHHHHHHH???. What’s with the new Lux ad?? Surat bhi hain khubsurat bhi hain?? Huhhh???

Amit says:

Most of the deo ads today are too suggestive.
The latest in the series of raunchy ones in AMUL - MACHO Yeh toh badaa (pata nahin kya) Hai Ad.

How do Indian ladies consent to work in such ads? Is this what Women’s Lib is all about? Or am I a Harappan? Or I am what the today’s GenX calls OLDIES? What is the Indian society coming to?

Self Recruits of the Indian Social and Moral Police busy hooliganising St. Valentine’s Day celebrations and voicing over Gere-kissing-Shilpa,…… are your eyes open?

gauravjain says:

the point is to get people to use condoms. if that is what it takes then so be it. the best time it to reach them would also be during something like an Indian cricket match.

India being a one tv household does make it uncomfortable for people but there is a bigger problem out there.

some ads are def overtly sexy (check out the Amul Macho ad) but people should vote with their feet by not purchasing the said product if it is offensive to them.

anyway, i think them EK tele series are a shade more embarrassing then these ads.

smallsquirrel says:

I haven’t seen the condom ads, but in my view… whatever (within reason) it takes in that regard to get ppl to purchase them and use them is fine with me. :)

I am just sick and tired of all these stupid as shit deo ads with women turned into whores just because some dude smells good. the newest one is more overt than the rest, where she is clearly envisioning them going at it just because he doesn’t smell like a goat. It’s ridiculous and it sends the wrong message about women. I too think the women who are in these ads are selling out their sisters, and I am a feminist!

But yeah, what is with the moral police? Cannot have a secular party but you can portray women as vapid, sex-crazed objects on commercials? nice double standard.

gauravjain says:

The deo ads just exaggerate a point to make a sale just like all advertising. i dont see it as demeaning. besides you have a women agreeing to be a part of the ad.

how come i dont see a bunch of women protesting the stupidities of the prime time soaps?

smallsquirrel says:

that is faulty logic… it’s not demeaning to woman because a woman decided to be part of the ad?!?!??!

uuuuuuuuuuugh.

gauravjain says:

why not?

gauravjain says:

i am not saying it absolves it entirely. but i dont understand how you can discount it entirely?

smallsquirrel says:

because that one woman does not speak for women as a whole. she might decide it is not demeaning for her personally… that I will buy. but it doesn’t negate the impact of her actions on the rest of women.

gauravjain says:

but i like them women acting as sex crazed objects, they are great to look at. i take it for what it is, an exaggerated ad for a product no more no less (which ill buy only if i like because i am not stupid enough to believe the ad is real)

similarly the whole dark skinned woman being the ‘bai’ in the veneta cucine ad NEVER crossed my mind till i read the post.

smallsquirrel says:

OK, most men like them. But I would assume you have some level of decorum and know that if you were to wear it that it would not mean that all women want you to pounce on them and have at them like dogs in the street. HOWEVER, the world is full of men that do not understand that and think that because women are portrayed like that in the commercial that they want men to maul them, and that this deo should help the process along nicely. I know you don’t believe it but it happens every day. It’s happened to me, and most of my friends. One extreme or the other. Had a man on the train in mumbai push his crotch into my face (I was sitting and he was standing) and he thought he has every right to do that and more. I also had a man the other day yell at me for not wearing a dupatta! so…..

the dark skinned woman thing is a different issue… the whole “light skinned is good/dark skinned is ugly” problem going on here. Fair and lovely teen? what’s next… fair and lovely infant??? sick.

gauravjain says:

well i don’t think the men are behaving that way because of the commercial. i think they were behaving like that way before Indian advertising got sexed up.

as for the dark skinned thing, i didnt view that aspect of the commercial till it was mentioned here.

all of us arent groping, bigoted perverts ya know.

ps. you arent going to have a hitman out looking for me are you?

smallsquirrel says:

ya, I agree (surprise, surprise) but I think the commercials just spur their fantasies on. same in every culture and country.

and I know everyone is not a groping bigoted pervert! silly! LOL

and no, I am italian, we handle our business ourselves…. ;)
