These days there is Job portal boom like they had the dot com boom few years ago. We see advertisements like “salary making you feel small… ” and stuff like that, everywhere. And particularly in the IT world we have so many companies coming up and competing for people. Many people like to do job hopping every six months; main reason being higher salaries. Most of them have take on it as “Ohh… that company is paying me higher salary. Why should I stick with one giving lesser one?” How good is that when we think of long terms? I mean is money the only thing we work for and nothing else. If we look at our counterparts in the other countries and try to understand their situation, they were under similar mentality a decade ago. And today they are facing with outsourcing/job cuts and unemployment. As I understand from them, when it comes to job cuts companies prefer to go for people with good skills and also who have been there for longer time.
I believe its time for us to sit back and think where we want to go professionally in longer term. What will make one stick to a company/work place?

Work - I came across this phrase somewhere “Blessed is he, who gets the work of his choice”. We all have different choices towards work type. And when we get work of our choice, work becomes party everyday.

Growth opportunities – After all we work for betterment of ourselves and it comes with opportunities to go forward in the career path. It is basic human nature to want to go up the ladder and not stay in same position all the time.

People – Yes they form very important part of the work environment. It is always advised to not mix work and personal life. But when you are spending more than 8 hours of day with office people, a comfort level has to be there. You can’t survive in a place for long where people are bitching and trying to pull you down all the time.

Policies/Perks – This is very invisible issue but works wonders when people talk about their company. You will find this as topic of gossip in almost all places, “Hey you know what; this xyz company is cool they provide free food and free massages”. This is just and example but such small things sure do make difference when it comes to giving preference to the company.

Company performance/reputation – If my company does not perform well overall what is the use if they are giving you highest of salaries.

Money - After all, nothing works without money in this modern world :-).

Excellent article. Candidates are so money minded these days. While recruiting engineers for burrp!, I’ve come across so many candidates who ask about the salary package in the phone interview round itself. This happens even before we get started with interview.

Of the many resumes that I go through, I see a lot of job hopping. As you rightly pointed out, people want to jump jobs in less than 6 months of getting hired. Why would I trust such guy to stick around in my company? Why would a company invest its time and resources to nurture an employee?

Just 10 - 15 years ago, people were used to life-long employment in sarkari jobs, fast-forward to today’s India where people want to jump jobs every 6 months.

good stuff here. Like Anand i meet with a lot of artists and its usually comes across that the person i am meeting is moving away due to salary or money issues. i have yet to come across someone who says they moved due to creative or fulfillment issues.

i avoid hiring people who come through looking at the money angle, because they will move when someone else throws them a bigger pile of bones.

Very mercenary, i don’t mind it , its a dog eat dog world, just don’t like it.

Ashley says:

Anand, I haven’t personaly recruited any such people but seen such tendency in many of my friends. Initially they are changing for money/work but after couple of hope a kind of uncertainty catches them and they go on hopping. I believe its bad for their own personal growth.

Gaurav, Yes it is indeed dog eat dog world. Its matter of personal choice for everyone… more money of secure long term job.

Gita says:

I am one who qualifies as a frequent job hopper and in my fellow men/women’s defence I would like to say that money isn’t always the “Main” reason for people to hop. I feel the biggest reason today is boredom. Some times, you are left hands tied with nothing at all to do or with a lot to do but no means to do it with.

This should be addressed as well.

Ashley says:

Gita, I would not say that you you should not change jobs at all. There are many a times when we get stuck with jobs we absolutely hate or the work conditions are not good. But my point is when people start hopping regularly the valid reasons fade away and a kind of uncertainity grips them whech is not good for thir own career. I believe that can be avoided

Nidhee says:

Money in today’s time is one of the highest motivators and pest in the recruitment industry. Since businesses are booming there is a dearth of manpower resultig in salary hikes. its a boom that would not last for very long.. the salary graphs will flatten. People are riding on the wave thats all. I have seen guys earn crores changing jobs for money.. and i have been into senior level recruitments.

I am yet to come acorss an organisation that says that i may not be able to pay you what the market might oevr six months but i will ensure satisfaction of you on a professional front and understand people issues.

How many organisations are people oriented in order to gain employee loyalty?

Shirsha says:

Gita, my doubt is how come you are hopping onto jobs whr u’d get bored yet again!? I mean, why not do a thorough check and make a sensible well-informed decision before getting onto the new place?
