Krishna Janmashtami: Meet The Makhan Chor!

Krishna Janmashtami is one of the most popular festivals in India; it comes a close second after Ganesh Chathurthi. The reason for this celebration comes from the popular tradition of breaking the 'Dahi Handi' or the butter-pot on the occasion of Lord Krishna's birthday. The festival always falls within mid-August to mid-September in the Gregorian calendar. The Story: It goes like this. Lord Krishna, known to be super-fond of the dairy delight, 'makhan' (butter) used to be known to frequently help himself to some from his mother's kitchen and friends' houses.  This earned him the tit...more

This Independence, It’s Pay Back Time!

Every year, Independence Day comes and goes, not many of us do much for the country that has provided shelter and security to us for so many years. Let’s show our country some love and respect with the smallest possible gestures. 1] Spare Some Time, Share Some Smiles Spend a few hours this Independence Day, with the people who need you the most. Gone With The Rain…

Sure it's raining and we are making the most of long drives, Mary Poppins umbrellas, flavoured teas, flip flops and a dozen other 'cool' prescriptions. But as rain drops collect on the window, here's what we are missing. Well, yes the American cousin is more juicy but we still miss the Indian white corn on the cob. Why? Well, 'coz that's what we grew up on and besides, it goes best with the masala that clashes with the American corn's sweetness. Magar mujhko lauto do bachpan ka saathi, woh kagaz ki kashti, woh baarish ka paani... Miss them, don't you? Well, the kids may no long...more

The City Which Wants to Sleep

The Queen of Suburbs, Bandra, is going through a lean phase with many of its leading pubs and clubs receiving the whip from legal forces. Popular clubs like Bonobo and Escobar, located on Bandra’s famed Linking Road, have been shut in the past one week. Even Royalty, the Shilpa Shetty owned lounge, failed to take off beyond it’s launch party. The prime reason for this is that the residents living in the area have filed complaints against them because of their irritation due to loud noise. A city known for its thriving night life is seeing a rapid decline in its clubbing culture due t...more

An Eye For An Eye!

Okay, as women, how many of us have had those leering no-gooders giving us the nasty eye? It's time to make them cringe back and make them feel the same way...bring it on, ladies! •    Dagger-Stares When we're on the train, shopping or travelling generally, nothing can irk us more than a random guy giving us the ol' two-eye one over. The best way to give these guys a taste of their own medicine is to stare right back!  Of course, give them the coldest look possible and keep the drilling look going till he averts his gaze. It doesn't feel so good now, does it, Mr. Creepy Lecher? ...more

Pet Perfect

Those of us who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s remember seeing pets and animals being portrayed in movies as important members of the household whether it was the black Labrador from Teri Meherbaniyan, the love-letter carrying pigeon from Maine Pyar Kiya, or the incarnation of cupid as a four legged canine in the form of Tuffy in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Most people might call it over the top and unreal. But as one man once said, Art is an imitation of life, and much like the mentioned characters, even in real life pets have an important impact on human life. And contrary to popular belief...more

Spread The Love

With cities like Bangalore becoming home to young professionals and expats on the move, social, non-profit organizations are now offering short-term volunteering options in a bid to minimise social crisis. While an overnight change in the equation is unlikely, technology and in...more
