Luck - The Unlucky Draw

Film: Luck
Cast : Sanjay Dut, Imraan Khan, Shruti Haasan, Mithun Chakraborthy, Ravi Kissen, Chitrashi Rawat
Director : Soham Shah

All it took was a little help from the starlet fraternity and the great gamble of 2009 got to a rolling start. Or well, atleast that’s what Soham Shah expected. Well he nailed the novelty. It looks different. Perhaps the only reason why Luck would get any lucky at the box office

Soham Shah’s crazy rollercoaster ride tries balancing a breakneck tempo with smartly crafted visuals. Sadly, Soham’s just cutting a hohum picture after all the prerelease hoo- ha. Luck mostly ends up selling overdone swagger, some needless maar- dhad and dialogue baazi, as Soham tries hiking masala quotient for obvious reasons.

Okay, let’s not be finicky. Luck was meant to be a Bollywood flick and nothing else.
The film borrows its basic idea from Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s Spanish cult hit, Intacto. Yes, we’ve become smarter now — we don’t blindly filch from familiar Hollywood hits anymore, nor do we stick to one source of inspiration. So Luck mixes the broad Intacto picture with several other flicks in the same genre. You’ll find a sprinkling of 13 Tzameti , notably.

Just don’t sit back trying to compare these cult films with Luck , and you’ll survive the show.

This is the story of Musa Bhai ( Sanjay Dutt), who wants to rule the underground betting circuit. Musa’s plan is simple: if he can create a pool of lucky people and make them play for him, he will never lose. For this, Musa devises a series of deadly reality TV- type ‘ contests’ to find out who’s lucky enough. These contests become the plot pushers of the film.
Technically, it’s manufactured to thrill. The editing is taut, the camera work smooth and action director Allan Amin obviously had a great time devising the played- to- gallery stunts. Luck also regales because Soham doesn’t let the pace of his script fall.
Where the film does falter is in its basics. The screenplay by Soham and Rensil D’Silva has too many loopholes to count. It’s the sort of story that you know can never happen in real life. Probably, Soham and Rensil stopped bothering about limits to the ‘ larger than life’ formula and characters after a point.

Imraan Khan in his second thriller — after last year’s dismal Kidnap — gets at least one thing right. His hairdo isn’t as bad as in Kidnap. The guy’s still struggling to come to terms with life as an actor outside the Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na comfort zone Aamir mamu crafted for him.

And screen presence isn’t one of his plus points yet.

Probably realising as much, Soham’s packed his cast with sturdy props. Sanjay Dutt plays his latest Bhai avatar with extra doses of aplomb. Mithun Chakraborty and Danny Denzongpa essay their roles confidently.

All eyes, of course, are on Bollywood debutant Shruti Haasan. Let’s be frank, you’ve seen the best parts in the promos and the publicity stills — the fab bikini body that’s been quite the talk of the town. The problem is, Luck doesn’t give Shruti much scope to flash anything ( read talent) beyond her sexy body.

great cast, good plot, shruthi is super hot. but. the hero mr imraan is the biggest let down. for a record he cant pull action scenes, he doesnt have the dominance how much ever he may scream or yell. he should consider television that too for not something like CID but rather tear jerking soaps
